Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Expected layoffs this round

ExHR friend (Haha that sounds funny on this board) has given me the heads up that a layoff is being planned for perhaps to day or just before the holiday weekend.

Soooooo who besides middle management is ripe for the pickin this round?

I think HSE is safe and that IT and Fin/Acct are not going to make it through unscathed. Supply Chain has to be reorged in order to cut more but I am not sure if they want to do it. Thoughts?

I did work in The Woodlands and really enjoyed the drive, but when the oil and gas jobs dried up there I had no choice but to drive to Greenway, Downtown, or the Energy Corridor. It just so happened it ended up being Greenway. What it came down to was that I wanted to earn as much as I was earning to pay for kid's college, etc. I could not find a job in The Woodlands that would pay me that, so off I went to Greenway. All I am saying is it will not ruin your life, but it will be an adjustment for sure. I either read a book, sleep, or watch Netflix. In the end I found out leaving early to get to work and get home was the way to go. If I leave The Woodlands at 5:30am I can be at Greenway by 6:20, and that is taking the toll road to 59. If I car pool it is a little faster, but not much. If I take the bus it is a little longer. In the end I find the car pool works best, and it is about an hour or a little more getting home. I leave around 3:30pm to get home, and there are a lot of us that do. Oxy has been real good about supporting car and van pools and the bus option. I would love to work in The Woodlands again, but that just is not in the cards, so I do the best I can. If you want to stay in oil and gas once your severance would be up you would be back looking at the longer drive. It is just a personal thing, but you should asked some of the LAPC how they handle the drive. I know a lot of LAPC already lived in the inner loop, so they were glad to go to Greenway.

Just release those outsourced India IT folks. Not worth dealing with them. These Indians HCL America are a drain and not good at answering service calls. Do nothing and barely understand the issues You need assistance with. Don’t outsource to India anymore.

@lhmt that is not comforting at all. Nice that you are acceptive of your commute. Woodlands LAPC didn’t sign up for this. There are only 24 hours in the day and now you want to try to convince me that I can afford to change my life so that I spend two of them commuting. What a bunch of f—ing b-s-. Do you have any idea how much work or family life can be accomplished in two hours?????

Speaking of going back to the offices, companies should be talking to their employees again about safe practices off of the job. Recommendations like don’t go to a large crowded group activity, don't go to restaurants and bars, don’t socialize in person, and wear a mask if you have to go out. This is just like providing tips on preparing for a hurricane.

I would not worry too much about the move. They leased The Woodlands for 13 years, and just leased Greenway through 2031. They barely have enough people that can keep up with the work now. With that said I could see moving to Greenway if they start selling GOM assets and maybe move accounting functions there.

The big thing is I bet we don’t go back to the office full-time until mid to late fall. This virus is not letting up and with Harris county in the shape they are in it will be tough to bring people to work. I understand the anxiety, but it might not be as bad as you think. I doubt LAPC will have to take the 30% pay cut so you dodged that. I live in The Woodlands and worked at Greenway before the WFH. It is a long drive, but my department works with people for car pools, van and buses, etc. It is not a drive down the street, but it is not as bad as you think.

Ditto below. Made us ineligible for any of the various packages over the last year then drive us to quit by forcing a move we can’t make then we have to leave unvested on the table. My family has been afraid this type of scheming may be going on and August is looming. Not sure what we are more afraid of: what school will be like due to COVID when the kids go back in August or being forced to quit in August with no severance package because of an impossible move.

The below comment about LOXY planning underhanded ways to force LAPC to quit after August is a huge fear of ours. HR please do what you can to dispel this. If you want to reduce LAPC headcount please do the right thing and package them out. Living for 12 months with this fear of what you will do to us in August has been debilitating.

90% percent of the three wasteful layers in IT management need to go and life will be better that way for everyone. Less talking and more doing for sure.

A layer of IT management needs to go. In my org the VP provides direction and leadership while the director just tries to figure out what our groups do and mixes in a few fancy terms. And annoys me. So fingers crossed.

They need to get rid of all of the unnecessary layers of management. It is especially bad in Land.

If they drop the layers of “management” added during the merger, that would make a big dent in the 25%.

The same managers joking about breaking LAPC, would be good candidates.

The GC at oxy cant be seen in a mirror, eat garlic or even walk outside for fear of the sun burning her undead body to ash. However, the employment lawyers are sure to keep craziness from happening. I mean they are the ones qualifying VSPs and CoCs with the help of a few select HR Cronies.

So they have to be good at their job protecting Oxy from frivolous firings and layoffs. /sarcasm

The below comment about “forcing and breaking the will” is sad and pathetic. But you’ve described perfectly the toxic culture of Oxy. They prey on people and have no servant leadership at all. Someday I hope you get to experience what it’s like to be part of a wonderful organization. It was a blessing to so many and they know it.

“Y’all “ legacy OXY can’t seem to compose a coherent message. What was all that garbage about firing for cause? Incoherent drivel. Maybe your cowboy boss thinks he will be able to lay-off based on cause but I’m sure the General Counsel at OXY will set him straight.

Slow down there buddy. I highly doubt being late will be used for 'Cause'. That being said, I wouldn't put it past some of the LOxy managers to say something like this in jest.... but really in this environment, I doubt they will act that dumb.

Yall legacy APC peeps are crazy. My manager is forcing a Greenway move for lapac rejects as soon as they hit Aug 8 (assuming we return too from WFH). This alone will cause tardiness for those commuting and bingo bango, you now can be laid off for cause. He even laughed about it being discussed as if it were a preferred method. There have also been discussions on how to treat complaining as dissent / refusals to work and how to document.

It's about to be a jungle and LAPC think they have a Survivor immunity idol but that thing won't mean squat after Aug 8. Relo, demotions, and pay/bonus cuts will break the will of the last LAPC arrogance remaining.

Then why did they restore pay?

by

Too many people keep referencing the PPP in these threads. Oxy (and three dozen other oil firms) cashed in on the CARES Act provision to deduct net operating losses and claim an immediate tax refund, NOT the PPP. They didn't return pay to 100% due to this provision, and they are not prevented from layoffs by this provision. Conflating two separate programs under the CARES Act.

Legacy APC can’t be laid off until August 2022 without invoking the COC.

I doubt they are going to offer any more vsp. This is going to be brutal. 2 weeks/year at oxy. I assume there will be a round of layoff as soon as Lapc is available. And I wouldn't be shocked if you will see another in Dec. 2021 is no joke, those bond payments are not going away.

If you think they are going to lay-off legacy APC “for cause”, and bypass the COC, your smoking dope. That’s not going to happen. OXY is going to have to resort to more voluntary severance programs. But their going to have to get serious about it. No one is going to leave for two months pay.

Man, for cause.... For our micro managers, they could easily look for things to gripe about to hr and make up reasons to layoff. We have seen it before in my dept.

As for this $9b .. wasn't that an estimate if they cant sell junk bonds?

They can restore all they want but they still got the total % saved for the q & year they needed. 30% for 2 to 3 months is roughly 6 to 7% annually. Add that to the no bonus payout and the books look better for both Q2 and the yearly balance sheets.

Objectively, we need more cuts and cost saving measures. If that means layoffs, then let's do it. But share the plan so we can all prepare.... most of us are doing more than one job now but without further help to see the finish line we may just as well give up.

Why would they restore pay and then do layoffs? Seems odd. Still can’t lay-off legacy APC... too expensive. The post that they will lay-off legacy APC “ for cause” rather than COC is lame and poorly thought out. The Denver operation is about half the size it was this time last year. Not much room to cut there given much of what is left is very “green”. If they do decide to do layoffs my hand is up! COC is a great thing!

When you are about to take a $9B write off on your assets, I should hope you are going to at least first layoff the masses that can be laid off. If this doesnt happen prior to the earnings call, I would be surprised. This exhr person biz doesnt seem like fake news to me. It's going to be rough these next months. Managers will start cracking down on LAPC so they can fire with cause vs CoC and then likley a pay or bonus % cut for Lapc who remain to better align with oxy pay policy. Ichan will not like shares and assets being diluted so he will need to do this prior to the Buffet payout due in Aug. So really more cuts are highly likley.
