Fritz and Vena couldnt be happier about the current situation. This is allowing them to dump all the customers that weren't quite profitable enough for their greed. It also absolves them from taking responsibility for it. UP can blame the virus for any and all mistakes. This will also allow them to eliminate a large amount of employees. Which helps justify dumping customers. Sorry we just cant service you anymore , we dont have the manpower. The next time UP has hiring sessions they're gonna have to offer $40k signing bonuses. Not that they will pay them anyway.

I do know that contractors aren’t going to be the saviors from complaining. The company has a hard time finding people that want to work here now ex: $20,000.00 hiring bonus for Switchman. I highly doubt they will be able to hire decent help for less pay and benefits. As for the automation of trains yeah it could happen but when it does I’ll guarantee a lot of other jobs will be lost besides just crews. A lot of other jobs at this company piggyback off of train crews. They could get rid of CMS, Timekeeping, Labor Relations, Managers, etc. So everyone better be careful what they wish for and look at the big picture I would think all of these people would be fighting for 2 person crews as well they should be equally concerned about their jobs. Unfortunately many are blinded by hatred and it will cause their demise as well.

The goal of any publicly-traded company is to maximize shareholder value. Period. That's capitalism.
@OP True, Covid-19 is a good excuse to clean house, starting with employees who do two hours worth of work and ten hours worth of complaining during a twelve hour shift. Everyone is tired of the constant whining. Contractors and automation are the wave of the future.

Yup, the sign on bonuses won't be paid out the rest of the way unless the employee rehires on and then the time will count again. A lot of people were stiffed out of a lot of money because of this low down c-ap.
