Thread regarding Sears layoffs

14 Kmarts left now

Alright! We are now down to only `4 non-closing Kmarts left. It appears, the Bronx Kmart that is closing, is the one with the pharmacy. I had predicted, previously, that at least 1 of the 2 Bronx Kmarts needed to close (since they were so close together), so this was not unexpected by me. I had thought that the one more likely to close soon would be the one with the pharmacy, as registered pharmacists get Paid Big Bucks, especially in a high Cost city, such as NYC. So the great thing about this, is that it breaks up the Bronx conglomeration of 2 stores being 4 miles apart, PLUS it KO's another pharmacy leaving only one (that's right, ONE) pharmacy within the U.S., with 4 more in the colonies.
And I don't see Grass Valley staying open long either, so we might soon have zero stateside pharmacies (no it's not yet confirmed).
The way these closings are coming, I'm sure I'll have to make some more lists again soon. Not sure why he is staggering the closings by announcing a few every Week, instead of announcing all of these in one lump sum. Who Knows why he does things as he does, LOL?

So, TL/DR, here are the 14 remaining non-closing (for now) Kmarts:

We are now at 14 Kmarts total, 8 of which are in the US. I have changed my map to reflect this as well, and the famed statistics section remains as always:

CALIFORNIA

  1. GRASS VALLEY -P

FLORIDA

  1. KEY WEST
  2. MIAMI

MONTANA

  1. HAMILTON

NEW JERSEY

  1. AVENEL
  2. WESTWOOD

NEW YORK

  1. BRIDGEHAMPTON
  2. BRONX

TERRITORIES:

GUAM

  1. TAMUNING, GU -P

PUERTO RICO

  1. HATO REY -P

USVI

  1. ST. CROIX -P
  2. ST. CROIX
  3. ST. THOMAS -P
  4. ST. THOMAS

Statistics: Kmart absent in 45 states. Now we have 2 states, CA, & MT, with only 1 each. There are 8 Kmarts in United "States", total. Of those in the US, ONLY 1, marked with letter "P", has a pharmacy as well as 4 more pharmacies in the territories, also marked with letter "P".
Additionally, Puerto Rico has 1 Kmart, USVI has 4, Guam has 1, so there are 6 total stores outside of the US. Total of 14 total Kmarts left as of now that are not closed or closing.

States with more than 1 Kmart:

FL: 2
NJ: 2
NY: 2

@1teo+1d7leDvX That is reasonable, but can I ask how you came up with that hypothesis? How did you decide which stores you think would close via which method? I'm genuinely curious, as to your thought process on this. Thanks.

At this point, it seems like that when Bridgehampton and Bronx (Baychester Avenue) go, I would imagine that those will probably be abrupt closures like Astor Place and Bronx (Bruckner Blvd.) I would also guess that whenever Sears Newburgh goes, that store might go through the normal liquidation process like Brooklyn is doing right now.

Ok, so I called Bronx. They Said main store closes TODAY, pharmacy closes THURSDAY. So no liquidation apparently. Is this a NY-specific thing, to just close without liquidation? Same deal in Astor Place Kmart, and Massapequa Sears, but interestingly not in Brooklyn Sears (which is undergoing a traditional liquidation as we Speak).

@xzr+1d7leDvX I really don't know why St Thomas or St Croix in the USVI need to have 2 Kmarts srsly it doesn't make sense when they are a few miles apart I don't get why some states/cities needed 2 Kmarts it really didn't make sense why they needed 2 stores
Same with the Kmart in Hato Rey PR it has a Sears right across the street from there

PhD or not, you need to see an M.D or D.O. for your 'Kmart' OCD. You make Chris Cronin seem sane.

@rcz+1d7leDvX Nobody can"Say" anything here, as it is not an audio based board. We can only type here, not TALK. Sincerely, a proud boomer.

@jxl+1d7leDvX You're right, not YOUR right. You're and your are not interchangeable words.

@whd+1d7leDvX. I saw the map and you're right. Having 2 Kmarts on that island, 2 miles apart is ridiculous.

@mwg+1d7leDvX You bring up an interesting idea here. Why would USVI need 4 Kmarts, yet Guam only has 1? Something fishy there. I think you bring up an excellent point about these being propped up by Subsidies. I hadn't thought of that. Even Target, etc., do not typically have stores 2 miles apart. That is crazy.

@zee+1d7leDvX I agree. Let's at least clear out the stateside ones for now. But yes, Guam & USVI will be the toughest nuts to crack. I think we'll break them down eventually though! Keep the Faith, we will achieve zero Kmarts yet.

@xqz+1d7leDvX Your right Westwood is one word. However what’s more important is that they have managed to survive again and make it to the final 14 Kmarts! I for one am hoping that the Westwood Kmart makes it to the final 10!

I didn't "SAY" if the U.S.. I WROTE it. Or more accurately, I TYPED it. And as for making a typo, everyone who isn't a God, Or Goddess, makes mistakes. But I make sure to promptly correct any typographical errors. Leaving them uncorrected is irresponsible.
Also, i don't care what you "highly doubt". I will lose exactly zero Seconds of Sleep, over what some random SJW on the internet thinks of me. Also, It's Phoenix not Phenoix. What on Earth is a Phenoix? How do you even pronounce that? I don't care if the term colony is condescending or not. In fact, now that I Know it irks you, I will use it more. Freedom of Speech, freedom of writing, Etc.. People can be "amused" or not. Colony is a perfectly valid term to refer to those areas. Guess what? The U.S. OWNS those areas. We rule those areas. People can get offended or cry. But that's the reality. Those areas are colonies of the U.S., and as a U.S. citizen, those colonies belong to me and every other American citizen. And I will continue to refer to it as such. My wife is from the colony of Puerto Rico.

So smart that you said “if the US.” Someone who supposedly has an advanced degree would be far more careful in writing and would have zero spelling errors, I highly doubt you have a “P.H.D.” Perhaps you purchased your degree from the University of Phenoix or some other degree mill. On another note, please don’t try to “school” me on the difference between territories and colonies. I work for the Federal government and I can guarantee that I have never heard anyone call nor would I ever call one of our US territories a colony. Not only is the term “colony” highly derogatory, it also incredibly condescending. Go ahead and call Guam a colony, see how well the local population takes it, I’d be willing to bet the people I work with in our US territories would not be amused.

"And I'm not trying to be negative I just have a point on the status of Kmart because they have the longest store closings in history they been closing stores since the 1990s and the 2002/03 bankruptcy..." completely ignoring the hundreds of NEW STORES that opened that same time period. Nice!

I have a P.H.D., I have no need to go "back" to school. I use varieties of words in my English. I might use the word house, I might use the word domicile, depending on my mood. I might use the term meat, or I might use the synonym, charcuterie. I occasionally write territories, or I occasionally use the synonym, colonies. Those words are interchangeable. Those areas are owned by the U.S., and therefore can be called territories OR colonies of the U.S., as they are under U.S. jurisdiction. Learn the facts first, before you insult someone else's intelligence. Don't believe me? Read it for yourself. Guam, USVI, PR, Northern Mariana Islands, & American Samoa are colonies if the U.S.. Residents of those colonies can vote in primary elections, but not general U.S. Presidential elections. Read, bub:

The “colonies”? Really? Do you have any idea how ignorant you sound? They are called territories, you even correctly said it later in your post. No clue why you felt the need to say colonies. Go back to school.

And I'm not trying to be negative I just have a point on the status of Kmart because they have the longest store closings in history they been closing stores since the 1990s and the 2002/03 bankruptcy I'm just gonna say that all of these Kmarts in the continental US need to close and like focus on Kmarts that are doing well like in Guam and the USVI where's there's less competition the Kmart in Hato Rey PR needs to go because Puerto Rico already has enough competition

I'm wondering if there is some sort of local government subsidizing deal in USVI. I mean, I Know the stores are popular there, with little competition, but do they really need 4 of them (2 on each island)? Maybe they have some arrangement, where the local government is Paying Ed to keep the stores open, and covering his losses (if any), just as a convenience to the residents of USVI. Just a thought, because there is no jurisdiction on Earth, other than USVI that still has 4 Kmarts. Even mighty Guam, only has one, same with Puerto Rico.

I'd like to think it's possible now that all Kmarts are going to close by the end of the year at this rate (or at least all of the ones located in states, the ones in territories might last a little longer)

@uyh+1d7leDvX It was 14, OP just confirmed his typo below.

On a side note, with 1 of the Bronxes closing, now the 2 closest Kmarts on Earth, are in St. Thomas, USVI. Laughably, those stores are 2 miles apart. Why do they need 2 stores, that are 2 miles apart? The ones on St. Croix, however, are 7 miles apart, which is still too close. They have to be taking business from each other. Each store should be minimum 10 miles apart, preferably 15. But 2 miles apart is laughable. I jog more than that every Day.

Few interesting tidbits. Hamilton, Montana is the only Kmart left that is not relatively close to an Ocean. The remaining Kmarts in NY, NJ, CA, FL, USVI, Guam, & PR, are all reasonably close to an Ocean. As OP mentioned, Grass Valley is the only pharmacy left in the US, but with the trend of pharmacies closing, perhaps we should look at that store as maybe coming in the next round. Miami really needs to go also, as it is less than 1 mile from Target. Ditto for Hato Rey Kmart because it shares a parking lot with Hato Rey Sears. I mean come on, Ed, close one and keep the other in Hato Rey, for crying out loud!
Of the remaining stores, West Wood is the only one that is only open 6 Days per Week, due to some odd blue laws. And it has been mentioned previously in another thread, but all the stateside Kmarts except Hamilton & Grass Valley are in Eastern Time Zone. I believe USVI, and PR have Atlantic Time Zone, while Guam, of course, has Chamorro Time Zone. West Wood Kmart, and Jersey City Sears, are the only Sears-owned stores left in the famed 201 area code, which was one the only area code of NJ, before they started splitting area codes, and now it is only used in Bergen (West Wood) and Hudson (Jersey City) counties. When those 2 stores eventually close, there will be no Transformco stores left in 201, which once boasted about 7 Kmarts and 4 Sears. Oh, how the mighty have fallen!
