Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Status Collector

Seems like the single point of failure responsible for making the company mediocre. So,

Why is the role so political yet powerful?
Which team has most SCs?
What led to the current perception?
Most companies have status collectors, what is so different about Q?

@1dir + 1oZgehUN What do you think of all the Teslas in Q's parking lot? Are you saying Q cannot build software at least as good as Tesla's.

@1pak+1oZgehUN: Auto may be safe for now. But the rot has already secured a position into the org. Board and investors should be fearful of the quality of software (which is always an achilles heel in Q). Auto is a totally different ball game.

An example is right in front of us. Even Apple with all its capability, bungled with the iPhone15. A subset of devices are heating up. Apple already released a OTA fix - they probably used their thermal sensors to sense and decrease the clock speed thereby degrading the performance. Slight reputation hit, but no major harm. Plus you have your customers in the walled garden called Apple Ecosystem.

Now google "Takata Airbags" and correlate to what I am saying...

When " rising tide lifts all boats " status collectors rewarded themselves and patted each other's backs.

But now that the tide is going out, you are laying off rank and file to protect yourselves. There is a reason Q directors and above are not seen as strong leaders by other companies.

@skj + 1oZgehUN spoken like a true status collector. Success is because of "me". Failure is because of others and externalities. This is exactly why everyone dislikes status collectors. Spineless sycophants.

@imd+1oZgehUN Interesting thesis (and I got to learn about the Peter Principle - thanks Wikipedia!). But do you really think that our issues aren’t very strongly tied to global macro economic conditions? End of 2021, everyone was completely on board with our diversification plan. Stock was at an all time high. Then Putin invaded Ukraine and we started seeing the impact of Zero Covid on China’s economy. I don’t think our current situation is due to ineffective management as much as a sh---y global economy.

I do understand the constant and consistent ire that is directed towards the "Status Collector" class in Q. But what has the bloated PM, PDM, ESG and other teams with higher titles than the typical "status collector" class in modem? The bloat is a recent phenomenon. There were a whole bunch of non-productive folks who completed their MBA's and moved into marketing roles. (that they completed their MBA's, by definition meant that they did not deliver 100% to their role).

To sum it, Q got "Peter Principled". The Exec Management moved a lot of good productive engineers, thus losing a good engineer and creating a bad marketing executive. These newly minted directors, senior directors and VP's are the ones who botched up. They made all the rosy projections. They were the root cause of Q not being able to grow either in the modem BU or adjacent ones. Will they pay the price? No - they are blaming everything and everyone from China to Biden to Ukraine and the exec management is silent because they are complicit.

BTW, Automotive, for now, appears to be different, but do not count on it. It is being Peter Principled as we speak. More on this later.

@bxr absolutely agree. I'm starting to wonder if 'status collectors' are the real problem or the toxic and venomous people filling this forum with posts.

Honestly, kinda agree with @czk. I’m really nervous about being laid off this week. I’m kind of sick of hearing about how bad Qualcomm is. Just leave if you don’t like it. I hope I get to stay.

@qkd+1oZgehUN here is the definition of a status collector. It includes a whole bunch of official titles. Not everyone with those titles are statues collectors, but a vast majority are though.

A status collector is usually a senior staff or principal engineer /manager or director. They are generally out of touch with technical work as they spend most of their time collecting status of features / bugs from people who do the work and report it to their higher ups. Their primary goal is in being connected to other peer status collectors or being in a clique that will protect them during difficult times like now.

Most of them are really good at making architectural block diagrams littered with acronyms that junior engineers are not exposed to. They also act as the sole interface to peer teams and higher ups, there by ensuring their presence/importance is known while controlling the growth potential of junior engineers.

Serious question: for the folks who think QC’s culture is so toxic and the company is bursting at the seams with high salaried people who do nothing but collect and report status, why haven’t you left yet? Why haven’t you found a job that better matches what you are looking for in a company?

Status collectors at Q are just parasites. They know they will not be able to get a job at other companies. Other companies also realize how status collectors at Q are just paper pushers who serve no useful purpose to anybody but themselves. There is a reason why modern companies have flat org structure.

I never understood the power of that role either. The ones I provided status too weren't particularly capable of anything else. Yet, they thought VERY highly of themselves and often abused me...

So glad to be gone now.
