Any guesses on the number of “hotshot” comments we get? Anything at all to address IT specific attrition? Or will we get “all is fine! We don’t need developers and you’re all overpaid anyways!”

My estimate of yearly attrition rate in the strategic EMIT locations between 15 and 20 %
As LT does everything to keep people does it mean the current rate is OK or have they lost control ?
My guess : inline with a hidden 5 years plan (following E&SP model).
Downward spiral...hmmm

BK should just apologize and be done with this madness. Some humility would go a long way.
"We want you to get comfortable with external help" AKA We're going to outsource you all
1cqb+1dQJrapZ. He (BK) already did!!!
Please bring back Mike Brown!
It was a total PR attempt to show BK in a good light, but, unfortunately it didn't work.
Recognition and an apology for telling ~3.5K of his team to "go to google at 3x your salary" would have gone a long way. It takes real leadership and much time to build trust and one thoughtless "hot shot" comment to lose that. Trying to show your human side with soda, "merch" and babbling will not repair the damage. Being a real leader and human means admitting your mistakes and apologizing to those that you've insulted.
No, we have the robot dog, SNOOP to the rescue! It will scratch all the itches and eventually cure any cancer.
Waiting to vote for SNOOP to be the next president.
I think the broader issue is with how the "business" sees service lines. Its more of an issue of service line employees being seen as secondary rather than localized management being bad at their jobs.
By not adequately rewarding good people, they are lowering the value that they receive in return (though they don't want to acknowledge this). This is why we have convoluted, clunky systems and why the tech is decades behind. This is why when you call up the accountant for your asset, half the time they don't know what's going on. This is why very few people know their HR representative or who to go to if something were to happen.
As a former service line employee who quit, this was one of the main reasons I left. It is a shame because there are truly talented people who circulate through EM in all departments. Many of my service line peers who left are now working at top companies, getting top tier MBAs, working in consulting, IB, and smaller companies contributing meaningfully to multi-million dollar decisions. If even some of the non-traditional talent was effectively used in conjunction with the engineering talent, it would be crazy to see what the company could be.
If we want to be a dinosaur, benchmark against dinosaurs (GE, IBM, etc.). If you want to be at the top, benchmark against the top and not just in terms of compensation for your best people. Encourage developers to start cool side projects and reward them for doing so. Start an internal strategy / consulting arm to bring fresh ideas to management. Start an internal venture capital arm to find the next big thing. These are all things that leading companies do.
The harsh truth is they are paying you what they think you are worth. Its up to you if you want to accept it or prove them wrong. I wouldn't bet on EM changing -- they are basically in liquidation mode given the giant, zero ROI capital plans (dividend & buybacks).
Life is too short to wait around, and Houston sucks :)
Good grief. What a SHITSHOW.
I really liked jokes and to see these folks poke fun at themselves and appear human. Hoping lower levels of mgmt take note and lighten up a little.
Total EMIT overhaul is needed IMO. Should create new org charge from scratch with only those positions that are essential. And then let EMIT folks apply for these new positions. Truth: EMIT has a bunch of useless roles, even those who organized this IT forum. Time to cut the real fat.
It amazes me how much waste of money and time was spent into the organization of this "forum". How does this ultimately help the business? There are so many BS positions at XOM. Id argue these are the ones that need to be PIPed. Frankly we dont need these fellas in the org.
Another uninspiring IT pagent. Please stop with nobody's favorite robot dog doing tricks. Did we spend the money on that just for employee events or is there an ROI? The memes reference by KQ reminded me of the clown meme. I envisioned KQ expressing his excitement in the team planning: Let us embrace the memes! I'll get a framed copy of my favorite meme of me. (Applies base white makeup.) And then you can say it's a gift for me co-host M! (Adjusts clown wig on head) And for the finale, I'll make fun of another American president. (Full clown attire)
@1jym+1dQJrapZ 300k in Austin or working remotely absolutely is doable for people who are talented and negotiate well. Actually even if you’re just “good” and an ok negotiator if you’re a developer right now you could get that too with how the market is. But for other tech jobs depending what it is yea great talent can get that. Maybe not barebones security and obviously not something like desktop support but if you’re looking at a cloud role or senior solutions architect, things of that nature yea.
300k in Texas?
I think it was funny to watch them try and explain why having a stable 110k salary is better off than having a variable $160k-$300k depending on the market and the year salary. Do they not know that 160 > 110? Or is it more likely that they think that maybe 300 < 110?
The forum wasn't funny. It was cringeworthy. It was difficult to watch. EMIT is run by e-dee-ohts. Bk should apologize for his hotshot comments
@1qds+1dQJrapZ XOM level thinking
@1lbc+1dQJrapZ why on earth did you turn down a _50%_ compensation raise? That's a career's worth of small raises for most people in EMIT.
While that forum didn’t push me over the edge to send my already typed resignation letter, it absolutely did not bring me off the ledge. If I don’t see a 30% increase (CL bump + general inflation + IT competitiveness inflation), which I see as extremely unlikely, I’m gone. I stupidly turned down Amazon at a 50% increase to my salary in mid 2020. Now it’ll be around 65%.
Fun forum format but did we learn anything new from it? Absolutely not!
This was a total waste of time and a joke! Management has no clue how to get out of this death spiral.
XOM IT is being run management re--rds for not figuring out reasons for attrition and having to hug it out in a room after their friends leave. #Amazing
“We are doing all we can to retain talent.” Kristine
Like PIP for employees just because they are introverts, but continue to provide a significant value to the organization? Talent is being shown the door.
Not allowing WFH… like multiple other companies?
Not starting up the 401k match soon enough?
Not providing a career path for technical “Hot Shots?”
It feels like XOM is S L O W and just crawling along. At this pace, XOM will never catch up to other employers making their environments more attractive.
This whole cheesy “fun” version of the forum is really pi----g me off. I came here for information about my livelihood not poor entertainment and information about BK’s childhood lack of sugar.
@1jex, BK can't stay on script, so isn't allowed to be live in a forum
Digital spend is "up 60%" but they don't talk about workforce spend is down even though we can see the decrease on the slide. Also goes against "stabilize the workforce/resources".
Uncle Bill is looking at the table a whole lot! Is he hiding something or lying to the interviewers?
“We have to get comfortable with external help”-sounds like more offshoring/outsourcing is coming
I cant wait for BK to call me a hotshot and wish me good luck!
“We truly are sad when people quit it sometimes brings us to tears. It’s totally not how we plan to hit our global workforce numbers”
Great! Let’s fix this then. Let’s get people excited to work for us and not quit, which you supposedly want (even though we all know this is how you plan to hit global work force numbers). People are quitting for things like pay, wfh, equality, etc. So let’s look at those topics!
“Like DW said we plan on working in the office because #weareexxonmobil and everyone will be like us someday!”
“We benchmark against a bunch of nobodies because we don’t want to pay you. Be happy we give you money at all!”
“Diversity means a lot to a lot of different people. We are super diverse because we hire in a lot of countries. It’s not my fault that they never make it anywhere, just bad luck I guess!”
Do you see any problems?
Hot shots only
BK you can’t both complain that the top talent is leaving AND say we won’t benchmark against the top tech places. Either accept the loss of good people or pay the top (not everyone) what they are worth.
I can't wait to see what happens when they open with an hour of pre-recorded videos during US hours tomorrow.
I think this is actually a pretty good forum.
I'll be the dissenting opinion and say: this is a good IT forum thus far
Proud of having never been to a theme park 🤦🏼♂️ BK is officially a robot from Boston dynamics that DW is trying out.
Wow.
BK can’t even be bothered to show up TO HIS OWN TOWNHALL. Seriously man? I seriously did not think he could sink lower. Please god let’s get rid of him.
