Thread regarding Whole Foods Market Inc. layoffs

Quick Question

So I have a question concerning the timing of Whole Foods opening up new stores in random cities. I used to work for the company in the FL region(multiple stores) and it always used to fascinate me when we opened up new stores company wide. Who picks these places? Do they do research/data on location or is it just that simple question on facebook asking customers where would they like to see a store. Who is in charge of this whole charade and how long have they been in power, while accumulating a team that agrees with them and passes it down to the region? It always makes me laugh when I see random cities. I picture the following conversation:

"Hey Bob.North Dakota doesn't have a store yet does it?"

"No Steve but we can't put a normal WF up there think of the media."

"Nice thinking Bob. We'll give the community a 365 store. Lower price and quality! It'll be schedule to open up in the year 2025. Jessica, go in my office and write up a small email. Cc everybody and tell them it was MY IDEA for this new city/area on the map. We are going to help the community eat better and also help lower obesity in children."

"Yes sir, I see why you were given this position. A take charge attitude and with a can-do mentality. WF is honored to have such a leader!"

In my head it plays out in different scenarios but always somebody wants credit and it turns into a HUGE fail. Every region has there own little Gollum store...I want to hear people thoughts because I was told these are planned out YEARS in advance!

Another classic was Kenilworth, which they changed it to "Asheville", even though there was already an Asheville store called Greenlife with initials ASH and the new store's initials were actually KNW which originally stood for Kenilworth. But it was absurd in the first place because it wasn't in Kenilworth it was just out on Tunnel Road. RIDICULOUS! These baboons can't even decide what to call their stores. So get this y'all: ASH is NOT Asheville and KNW is NOT Kenilworth. KNW is Asheville and ASH is Greenlife Asheville. Confused yet? HEY MANAGEMENT: YOU PEOPLE ARE IDIOTS! Anyway all they needed to do was totally remodel and expand the existing Greenllife store but instead they opened a new one 3 minutes away. You can just imagine how that's working out.

Their so full of themselves that they would open a store on the moon and expect to change the culture. "We're not here to sell groceries, we're here to change the world". #wholefoodsmarket #TeamWFM

Your scenario definitely has some validity. I know in the case of Jackson Mississippi there was all this public relations BS about changing how the people there eat. Last I heard they're still gorging on pork rinds, grape soda and cheeseburgers.

It's one thing to pick a community, another thing to locate the specific spot in that community. But either way, I don't see why (for example) we intentionally chose poor locations with totally inadequate parking, or way out of town, or far from the main business corridor, or 3 minutes from an existing store or with a fast-food joint right in the front parking lot. Needless to say it's just another example of these merchandising geniuses not having the any understanding of what they're doing. They have this idea that folks will drive through 40 minutes of urban rush hour traffic to the opposite side of town where the land was cheap to get Frankie's Olive Oil and 365 crackers on their way home from work.
