Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Don’t be impulsive

I work alongside a great guy but lately he is so fed up with the company he is thinking of just walking out. I can understand his frustration, we’ve all felt it a time or two. He thinks he can find similar employment, but c’mon we are in a pandemic and from what I understand other O&G companies aren’t faring any better. I hope for his sake he doesn’t do it because there are 100 other guys eager to take his place.

@1oia+17eHGN7v I don't disagree conceptually. But it doesn't have to be a job.

As a mentor told me: don't run from, run towards. If you have something else in mind, be it learning, classes, another job, a startup idea, spending time with family, then pursue that in lieu of wasting your time at a meaningless job. But make sure the primary reason you're leaving is what's next. That Oxy is a dumpster fire is just icing on the cake.

I agree you should stay UNTIL you find another job. As somebody who was job hunting for 6 months, I can definitely say the best time to look for a job is when you have a job.

Keep focusing, people. Keep focusing on what you think is the biggest impact on your future. Keep doing it.

All the more satisfying when those smiles are wiped off your faces, when you realize of totally wrong you are.

Honestly if you have stuck with Oxy this long, why leave before you have something else?

The worst may yet to come but why walk now with nothing vs giving min effort and searching for a better opportunity.

@ask+17eHGN7v that's a nice concept in theory, but not in practice. Oxy will throw you out in a heartbeat, there's no reason to stick it out.

As for the OP, there are many opportunities that pay better and have a better corporate culture. Keep looking, but they do exist.

The OP makes a good point to stick with it. With many companies like Oxy there are ups and down in the business cycle as well as the company culture. Maturity means sticking with something through the low points as well as the high points.
