Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

CA said “bye bye” At the AHM, and bye bye will be

Offering full remote positions and changing the policy to return to the office is unethical, and does not respect all the employees who really are working hard to make this company what it is now.
I don’t want to work anymore for such a company. CA showed the really toxic culture Qualcomm is becoming.
BYE

Unpopular opinion, but it is definitely unfair to those of us that actually drop kids off at school, drive in rush hour, come into the office, pick kids up after, take kids to after school activities, etc. We were literally doing this for 5 days before Covid and Q has been really flexible if I need to leave work early or not come in for those same reasons. Guess it boils down to how flexible your team/dept is…

Some people were hired fully remote in other states and do not even have an office to go. These people will remain as location "Off site" and will work 100% remote.

I am glad I got a package and retired. QC is not the company it once was when I joined in 2000. Around 2015, it started to go to cr-p.

I retired from Qualcomm a year ago. But boy I hated the late night conference calls with India. It was bad enough you had to work all day, and then spend your evenings on the phone dealing with issues. Offshoring is terrible for those left in the U.S. to deal with issues.

@1gga+1vGv2SIz: I couldn't agree more. I am no longer with QCOM, but when I was there during covid time, I have been burned from both ends due to remote work. On one hand I was answerable to my Sr.Dir to ensure bug fixes get rolled in as planned. On the other, my team members, were not paying enough attention to detail and created more issues, but out of loyalty to the team I had to take the hit on myself! In one case, this lady, even after giving clear instructions on the nature of the bug, resolved it but created two more! I hear she got promoted last year.

The point being that if there were no covid WFH, this lady would have been in a meeting room along with 4 other team mates during code review and I am sure she would have not created those 2 additional bugs. Remote WFH code reviews are horrible to conduct from a lead's perspective - half the team is distracted with something else and you need to say,
"hey...xyz...do you agree to shift the lsb blah blah...?",
then, no reply,
"hey xyz, are you listening?",
then comes the reply," oh sorry, I was on mute, what was the question?" ....
"we just discussed it - did you not get it?",
"oh sorry, the audio on my end is bad, pls repeat the question"...
At this point, I would like to say, "this meeting is over, let us convene after lunch in meeting room 430B and resolve it...thank you".

Help me understand the logic of not wanting to be in the office. Before COVID we all had to be in the office. People complaining about their commute or having to get their kids ready for school. What did you do before COVID? Given the current economy how about people be thankful they have a job and great benefits instead of whining about having to be in the office. How about the complainers do something and leave Qualcomm f you’re so unhappy about having to show face in the office.

Signed, someone who actually likes being in the office.

Can someone clarify - are fully remote designated employees exempt from returning to an office (i.e. "grandfathered-in"?)

Because of the poor performance, I think that, a layoff will be required, and this can be a quick way to reduce the workforce. Still the way it was presented is unethical and can only lower the mood and motivation of the employees.

CA is a bit detached from the reality, “ the plan” is less than vague and repeating it 100 times doesn't make it more likely.

Qualcomm did not offer many fully remote positions. Whoever got it, that was because of covid spread at the time. Covid is past now. So will be fully remote.

Let’s look at this logically. For the tens of thousands who joined us post COVID the WFH was offered as a perk. The stats are 20% are not complying so if they are forced back to the office they will naturally perform poorly, increase stress, and put further drag on the company. A good portion of those employees will spend the majority of time searching for a new job or contemplating retirement. Is this the type of culture that will produce excellence? It’s time to GTFO since there is no chance of growth like there was in the past. Just look how poorly we did after investor day… the Market has no confidence in us. I hope CA and others take note that they need to back off from the RTO mandate or it’s doom and gloom for the company.
