@1nrj The number had a certain ring to it, and it looked good next to some bar charts in a PPT. Executives love bar charts.
The reason why it doesn’t mean anything is because the 55 represented a ratio taken with respect to a currency (i.e. the dollar), and currencies are subject to inflation. If inflation continues at the current rate long enough, it will drive operating costs back up. At that point, the UP brain trust will come up with a new number and a new slogan. Rinse, wash, and repeat.
Someone in a leadership ship role stated that 70% of furloughed employees have or are going to return from furloughed status. So we’re not worried about manpower he explained. I think we all know those are some false numbers. I believe the article was on railway age or progressive railroading check it out.
Any bets on how long they'll be able to maintain it? The 55% meant nothing at the beginning, and it still means nothing today. There's scores of people who jobs were sacrificed for a number that will probably be going up very soon. Does anyone really believe that 55% actually means something? I can't imagine they would cook the books and make up fictitious numbers to meet a goal. The UP management has an impeccable streak of being honest with the employees, especially since starting PSR.
We also achieved a 5% pay increase for north platte after the strike and negotiations!
