Impossible to take vacation due to workload in Permian

Anyone else feel like it is impossible to take vacation? Feels like company gives me a benefit but no way to actually use it. If I leave there isn’t anyone to cover for me so it is he-l when I get back: thought about taking half days on Friday but how can I finish my work in 4.5 days when I am working so many hours per week to cover the workload with current min staffing?

I'll agree with what someone said below. Use your vacation days regardless of the impact when you come back. If you are in a role where no one can fill in for you, bring that up to your sup and let them know that it is unfair. If your sup won't help, keep going up. My biggest regret is not maintaining a work-life balance when I worked there (seriously!). XOM will work you until you drop - if you allow it. Don't.

@OP If they don’t give you the time off just start calling in sick on those days. They’ll get the message soon enough. Don’t burn yourself out for EM or anyone else.

@1mun Wrong website.

It’s the same at the manufacturing sites. I feel for you and your not alone. Focus on good things and get out of there before you die of stress. They will replace you the next day and not feel bad bout it

I worked there 30+ years never had a problem taking my earned vacation days. If you cannot take off then you have worked yourself into that problem. Never saw anyone get ahead by working themselves in the ground and not taking their vacation days earned. If you are worried you will be fired, it is time to leave n your own.

PIP might be used against you even if you don’t take vacation and do all your work perfectly. It’s a relative system and if you are perceived to be below all your peers, then you’ll be PIP’d.

Take you vacation. Get your resume polished. Let come what may. No job is worth your health and sanity.

It felt like getting laid off was the end,
but it wasn’t. It was a new beginning. There are fantastic opportunities out there. You just need to find them.

Helpful advice. I’ll try that. My supervisor does try to help me. I guess I am just so worried about PIP and anything being used against me. Thanks.

Are you asking and being denied? Or are you imposing this problem upon yourself?
If you're creating your own problem, request the time and take it when it's approved. You have to look out for your own health and sanity. The company will still be there when you get back. If you're in a role where you personally are the only one that can do your work and it gets backed up, then point that out to your manager and work with a backlog if you have to. What are they going to do, lay you off? If what you say is true, it would be a bit difficult to do that, since you're the only one who does whatever you do. :)

I am working from home here. It is like vacation everyday! Weekends felt less special these days.
