I was in the team, and the software manager usually showed up 10:30 AM... then the manager had coffee for another 30 mins.... then "work"... then around 12:30pm or 1:00 pm, another 1h lunch... then at 3:30 pm, the manager disappeared. The manager did not do any code and did not seem to understand anything about SDLC, and most part of the decisions were made by the TLs. Then the layoff came, I worked my a@@# off, and I and some developers were put on the layoff... the manager stayed LOL... In all other companies I worked for, the managers were the first ones to be in the office and the last ones to leave.. they also helped code the critical parts of the software besides the people's management. What does Google really expect from these software managers?

Managers at google are very smart and technical. They have low ethics though (they don’t hire males or americans).
Most of the Doodles now are about nobodies. Just a few weeks ago there was a Doodle about a guy who identified as a hieroglyphic.

Managers at google are a joke. I really try to understand what they are for. Dont code, Dont design, Mismanage people, Dont decide, Dont collaborate. They are impracticable unworkable. Now imagine a legion of managers promotes to director roles on last 10 years. This explains a lot. Sometimes I feel my team run by itself because we are the one that produce, take the decisions and set the directions. Then we have a bozo to do the perf reviews/grad.
