Thread regarding Saudi Aramco layoffs

Profiles of expats

I generally find expats fall into these categories in Aramco.

  1. Maxing it out until retirement.
  2. Have a target $$$ and therefore planned leave date.
  3. Recent joiner and wondering WTF to do (my category)

I’ve yet to encounter what I was hoping would be another category in which folks are engaged and into the work, finding some meaning.

Unfortunately I found about this website the day I got laid off. When I was googling news about layoffs.

Some friends joined afterwards with packages about 10% less than my 2014 offer. Seems toxicity gers worse by the hour.

Not everyone knows about this site before moving over. I was there two years and I only found out about it after I had left.

And at 6 weeks, what did you do?
I’ve heard stories of folks leaving in about this timeframe? I am 2 months in and on the verge….

OP here.
@1lue+1kXiyDgr no I didn’t know about this site. If I had…

I only checked aramcoexpats and YouTube and talked to a former colleague. It’s my bad. I admit it and didn’t post for sympathy.

As SAIP is being paid early this year, Category 2 will come sooner for some people.

Engaged? find meaning? lol. These are the guys most hated by their peers and the bosses coz they make things difficult, not team players. Often the first in line to get the ax too. Remember, you do what the bosses want, and you are in a logic free zone so don't even waste your brain cells. Almost everybody I knew, me included, started as a 3 type. Then came to realize that its not sustainable nor smart.

It's about longevity and having an end game. Forget about retiring (1) there, no longer possible. Earn enough (2) then get out while you are still employable elsewhere and while your health and sanity is intact.

I was a 3 for awhile, gradually morphing into a 1 as time progressed. If I've said it once I've said it 100 times. If you choose to become a 1 or 2, keep your head down and play the game. The game of appearances and perceptions. In the end It's a valid strategy and could serve you well. That type that you spoke of lastly is as rare as the Rub Al Khali unicorn.

#1 here. Just waiting for departure day. I recommend don't come here unless there are no other options. Most of the comments on this website are more true than not.

Unfortunately the last poster is spot on.

You’re not going to find anyone that is genuinely enthused to be here, it’s a symptom of the company and the toxic culture. Took me 6 weeks to become disenfranchised, some quit within days others a few months. The old timers on the better packages will be gone in the next couple of years, those that remain are just people who are at that point in life when is just a $$ collection exercise, or they’ve given up on any ambition.

Aramco spends a fortune on PR and spin, it’s inversely proportional to the actuality.

Record profit announcements are coming very soon, collect your bonus and leave.

Didn't you know about this site before you came. Did you think that the people posting here were just a bunch of malcontents?

There are quite a few knowledgeable posters here who constantly tell everybody not to move half way around the world to work for Aramco if you have a half way decent job in the west. If you ignored that advice, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Aramco is a bad situation that seems to just be getting worse from all I hear. I doubt you will be able to work there for long, and so you will be coming back to the west one way or another. All I can do now is wish you good luck.
