Thread regarding Ford layoffs

This shouldn't be legal

How is it even legal to lay people off just a few years shy of retirement? That screams age discrimination and yet Ford keeps doing it. Are they so confident that nobody will bother to sue them so they just keep doing the same rotten thing over and over again???

Technically it isn’t legal but they make you sign documents saying you won’t sue before you can have your severance package. they also eliminated one or two younger people and at least one person from each diversity category making it difficult for any lawyer you hire to fight their army of corporate lawyers.

SRD happened when I had 29 years seniority. Just got my 30 year award in the mail.

@1lrp as opposed to the dunderhead challenger who probably thinks Ford is still making the Model A and bombers at Willow Run.

So true bet on yourself
Pay attention, if your company/industry is declining don’t put your head in the sand. Prepare, educate yourself, make a plan to exit now. Everyone knows significant headcount cuts are coming. Do the math. Don’t get caught unprepared. Don’t go down with the ship.

@1gwi Hate to burst your bubble....

"And, our liberal, messed up, court system is no longer predictable."

A liberal court system would favor the employee. You meant conservative court system that favors the employer. FIFY

Does anyone have any personal knowledge of an age discrimination lawsuit resulting from the 2008 or more recent SRD? If so, how's it going? I suspect not well. The comment about $300/hr lawyers and years of grief is spot on. I was fired in 2008 after 24 years of great performance reviews. Wrecked my pension and retiree health care. After a $400 consultation with a well known labor attorney, she convinced me that I did not fit the "mold" for a discrimination suit against an "at will" company. For all of those people on here saying they will file an age discrimination lawsuit, I hope you know a lawyer who owes you a big favor - they don't work for free. And, our liberal, messed up, court system is no longer predictable.

They have so many lawsuits against them already. They don't care about employees–period. Just get out when you could cost us too much. The old days of working for a good company for your career are long-gone. Been there, done that.

Consider this - Ford has several floors of lawyers on the payroll at WHQ. Fired employee has to hire one at $300+ per hour. Ford will drag out the process, causing you undue stress/bitterness and more financial loss. Ford (and your lawyer) wins. Maybe they throw you a few bones if you are lucky.

And - for those wanting to continue working, hope your name doesn't show up in the Free Press article that will get published about the lawsuit. Future empoyers might consider this a bad look and label you as a sour employee.

There were a a couple of class action lawsuits filed after the layoff in May 2019. Not sure if they won anything though. My hubby qualified for retirement so he “retired”, took the lump sum & 401k out & gave it to our financial guy. Found another job, so will work a few more years. Not quite ready to actually retire. Just a shame he couldn’t have worked a few more year at Ford. I’m a Ford girl born & bred, & it has soured me against them a little. My hubby dedicated 23 years to them, had great reviews & awards. Just a shame!

They aren't worried because the courts keep letting them get away with it.
