Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Is your plan to retire from Dell?

This used to be a given for a long time, but fewer and fewer people see it as happening these days, both due to layoffs and simply not wanting to work here anymore due to all the problems/changes. I'm curious if that's the prevailing position here as well.

On Glassdoor, Meta salary for a software engineer is between $223K and $322K/yr, median total pay is $265K. Are you “really” a software engineer, or are you an engineer with coding experience? Because, unfortunately, Dell has a reputation of being a legacy hardware company. I’ve had engineering friends who were 100% software engineers who struggled to get good roles in big, modern software companies because of the perception of Dell. Anyway, I hope I’m wrong, I hope all of you move on to great, better paying roles.

engineering/software Dell is definitely low paying.

What do you mean low-paying?
Here am I - an Engineer with 20+ years of coding experience and I make $250K. Compared to Meta I am definitely low payed - in Meta I would be making at least something like $600K. But I am ok with what I get - these days I enjoy relatively low stress jobs, quiet life with work from home and daily sports activity.

If you cannnot even come to terms with this it tells me you have camped out at dell for decades.

Firti time commenting but I'm quite a number of years in Dell (engineering), we lost a lot of our staff and was pi---d off about that - I'll be sc--wing them in the next Tell Dell for sure. But will I leave before retirement? No, I quite like my job and get on great with my team (or rather what's left of it...). If I got WFR I'd happily take it as there's plenty of other jobs I could get in my area or I could just retire - not many are in my position though.

I keep seeing the "low pay" comments. If you have special skills, particularly in AI, yes, there are higher paying jobs. But Dell is not low paying overall. I think many people are in for a rude awakening.

My plan was to stay here as long as possible. I was laid off from another large company several years ago, and when I joined, Dell had a similar culture to that company. I thought I had found a place that I could call home. In somewhat different fashion, but similar circumstance, Dell management seems to have worked us into a corner with regard to strategy and the layoffs have been brutal. I think I'm at the bargaining stage of grief where I keep telling myself, "You know, if I could just hold on a few years long, I could create my own terms to leave." I don't know that I'll be able to make it that long. Sad that the people who want to be here might not get the chance, and the people who don't want to be here are in positions to stay. Dell's culture, in general, is what needs the overhaul.

Let me see,… low salary, no promotions, overloaded with work, random WFRs, … it is time to move to greener pastures, this is no longer a profesional environment

I made no secret of my wish to retire early - but I couldn't afford to. Fortunately I was asked by a senior manager if I would be prepared to take a WFR package. I took the cash. Part of it was tax free and the rest was protected from taxation by putting it into my pension. I managed to retire 4 years earlier than would otherwise have been the case. I guess I was lucky.

There is no benefit from retiring from Dell. You get nothing, it's no different than quitting. If you are lucky, you will get WFR'd when you are ready to be done.

A lot of people being put through hard times because of Dell, I don't think any people here are interested in hearing about the old timers (like me). And it's fair. Nobody really is making enough to retire on off of Dell stock like we did way back when, and this insane constant downsizing makes it feel like "almost" nobody will get to have a long career at Dell that leads to a happy retirement.

It's everywhere. If there wasn't so much change at Dell, it would be easier to assess. Right now, the constant change clouds everyone's judgement.

I dont think anyone really wants to work at dell till retirement. It's like they are stuck after xx years and see no other way out.

I'm gonna milk this cow until there's nothing left. After that who knows, maybe become an electrician or something trade related.
