Detroit is a ghost town because the auto companies moved manufacturing to the south where they could pay lower wages and less benefits. Don't blame the unions for what corporate America does, it lets the real culprits off the hook.

Ask the former auto union members about the good pay, benefits, and working conditions in Detroit. Thanks to the corrupt Union bosses, Detroit is a ghost town.

Only 6.2% of the total population belong to private companie's Unions, therefore the only news that really get benefit are the ones with 20+ years of service, everyone else is wasting their money.

Not being part of the union/being part of weak union is why most of you frequent this site shaking in your boots waiting on next layoff. it's so sad that these companies have you all brainwashed to believe that the union is worthless and evil. Working conditions must be real great for non union having offshore employees taking your jobs being paid pennies? Hell, look at companies here in United States that don't have a union Workforce . They don't make nearly as much as AT&T employees or other Union employees of other companies . Do you think these companies care about you? That's why a strong union is needed to protect our rights. Yeah, the union is not perfect but working conditions would be a lot worse if it wasn't for the Union. The union is getting weaker and weaker as the years progress and salaries are going down as well. Management here at AT&T is being laid off in the thousands while the company makes more and more money. At least the union employees, or at least some of them have a job offer guarantee. some of these these Union employees have been on payroll for almost 30 years because of a good Union contract and NOT the giving kind heart of greedy executives

For those trying to leave the union it's not as easy as it seems, 3 ways to do it, hire an employment lawyer, get a management position or find employment somewhere else

CWA is part os the SWAMP, while AT&T and Time Warner will use corporate buzzwords like “synergy” and “vertically integrated” to argue that this deal is good for average Americans. In reality, it would give AT&T even more control over our TV and Internet experiences. For example, if it owned HBO, AT&T could also refuse to offer competing movie channels on an equal basis. As the owner of the distribution they could use their power to make their own channels more attractive and available to consumers and they could effectively choose not to carry any content that competes with Time Warner’s broad slate of content.

Here’s the worst part: Since Time Warner owns CNN, this could have hugely perilous effects on our news environment and your ability to choose what to watch. It’s not hard to see how AT&T could discriminate against other channels – including conservative voices – by putting them in a bad spot on your channel line-up and trying to make their shows hard to find. The AT&T/Time Warner combo could easily ensure that CNN is more accessible to consumers than competitors like Fox – to further increase CNN’s power to push their liberal agenda.

www.unionfacts.com/employees/Communications_Workers_of_America shows a list of CWA officials and their salaries and benefit packages. The first 200 make over $100,000 a year!

Please take a look at the list and you will see where your dues are really going. Look at the job titles like "CWA Rep" and "ADM DIR TO VP" that make $115K. How many of you folks make that kind of money? Remember, we are out restoring service and the CWA officials are in a nice office. SMH

For me Learning to stand on your own two feet all the time will make it easier to stand alone when things get ugly and there is no one there to help you; it could mean a matter of life or death, if not of your body then of your sanity. By giving this organized unions the power to decide for you your future is counterproductive This is not to say that we shouldn't ever ask for help — we should ask as often as possible. However, we must be ready to take on any burden ourselves if that is the only possible solution.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in June that American union membership declined to 10.7% of the total work force in 2016, down from 11.1% the year before. That means that we have 240,000 fewer union members today than in 2015. There are 14.6 million union members left in this country, almost equally divided between the public and private sector. But more than a third of public sector workers are unionized, while in the private sector the union rate is a paltry 6.4%. Likewise, there is a geographic divide in union membership that broadly mirrors which states have anti-union “right to work” laws: “All states in the West South Central division had union membership rates below the national average, and all states in both the Middle Atlantic and the Pacific divisions had rates above it.”, what this tells you? It is not rocket science people. WAKE UP!

As a management employee I appreciate the hard work of unions to ensure a FAIR employment situation between employers and employees but the CWA has changed. Not only are they completely ineffective for their members they fight for the wrong things. CWA is plagued by corruption.

Thanks to the unions, the AT&T core contracts contain employment security language, including a job offer, priority treatment in seeking other jobs in the company, service bridges if one is rehired, etc. And the separation package is going to be better in most cases than the package without a union.

But, the most important thing about working for a union is, one can not be fired without cause. Without a union, one can be fired for any reason or no reason, excluding of course, unlawful discrimination. So, having a union promotes fair treatment of workers.

It is because of unions that you have the 8 hour day, overtime pay, vacations and benefits.

Union wages and insurance benefit managers also, because it forces the company to compensate managers with at least what the people who report to them get.
