I don't know why people keep asking if the severance is as good as the VSP.

The VSP is meant to tempt you into wanting to leave.

When the company decides to let you go, it's their decision and they don't have to be generous. They don't legally have to give you any severance at all.

To reply more:

1- All of my reviews have been good, not a low performer or PIP
2- Worse than VSP.

Before I took the VSP, there was a hiring freeze (higher level managers said there wasn’t one but what else do you call not letting anyone move around unless they had some special skill set). Has that been lifted? If not, how is anyone going to find another position within GM?

Sometimes when you interact with these people, you understand why Mary says she's "winning with simplicity" by "re-balancing our engineering resources". The amazing thing is that they are likely going to ask the same question a third time.

Better hurry up and sign the ESG pledge so you aren’t marked as non-compliant.
Kiss the ring.
I’ve noticed some of the women promoted into upper management are now wearing leather jackets in their profile picture.
Pathetic and phony.
But yeah, better check that ESG box.
It’s funny that a global corporation that employs sl@&$s in Ch!n@ to mass produce pollution machines is claiming to be humanitarian and environmentally responsible . #ESG so phony

How is the severance package

Last year everyone got "stretch objectives". Something like, you need to work better as part of a team. You need to lead more. Etc. If you did not accomplish that objective, you are now targeted or have already been given layoff notice. Plus, if you are over 50 and not woke, that has an impact too.

Which org? Engineering.

It would be nice if someone shared what org or SLT(s) are involved for context.

Layoffs are in what's left of the Validation ORG. About 150 people and they were given Nov 1st deadline to find new roles

I knew a coworker in March that their position was eliminated and had 90 days. Fortunately for them VSP was rolled out and they took it.

Fake news most likely. No way GM will let you stay till Nov.

This is definitely a new thing. I never heard GM giving potential layoff people some time to find another position within GM. I'm not IT so is this IT thing?

They have done this in the past where they told people to find a new job by x date, and if not they were let go. It’s not new. It has not been done for a while.

It’s not so easy to count on applying to an internal job, getting contacted by HR, scheduling an interview, and being fortunate enough to be selected, all within a small timeframe.
A crapshoot at best. Especially when hundreds of people are vying for the same role.
Is this affecting only fully remote people? IT only? Is it phase one of a drawn out process?
$1 billion is a lot of money. Likely the cuts will be painful.
Also, restructuring could be messy.

So you aren't really laid off yet because you can move to a different position in the company or find another job and leave. If you did do damage between now and then, you'd be putting your severance pay at risk.

So they're allowing you to apply within the company? Have they ever done that?

Was the severance package the same as the VSP or worse?

Leading up to the 2018 layoffs, they froze transfers and closed open reqs so people were trapped where they were.

To answer additional questions, offer additional details.

1- I am not a contractor
2- I was hired 100% remote from a non-GM state (Vermont)
3- I was basically told the same thing. Find another job at GM by X date, otherwise here are your severance details.

Yes I can concur more people were let go today. There was a invitation only meeting and they were told to find another job by November 11 or they'll be separated from GM. This is part of the restructuring. Almost all of my team members were told. Luckily I survived thus with few other team members. My EGM was also told to look for another job.

They let the VSP people stay for months, but they were voluntary and happy to go.

Anyone notice the login screen this week?
Tailgating warning, which correlates with fears of active sho-ters, which correlates with what? Terminations.
They couldn’t be more obvious.
The plot simmers.
Maybe we will get a new survey asking us if we want a full transition into a 100% return to office. We gonna party like it’s 2019.

Are you on a contract/not direct or a supplier placed on campus? This doesn’t make sense. GM doesn’t lay off people and let them stay another 6 weeks. That’s a risk of security of product/processes and a safety issue to others in the building.

To answer.
1- good relationship with boss. Her face was bone white when she told me the news.
2- Package is bare minimum as per employee manual.
3- IT adjacent

I am not sure if this is true. Usually GM won't let any laid off employee stay. They get let go out of the building right away.

Back during the last big layoff, they quietly laid off 10% of the company throughout the year before the big 20% layoff.

1, 2, or 3 people were cut under each manager.

They just disappeared with no warning or announcement.

Their desks were just empty one morning.

Did you have any warning, like a bad relationship with your boss?

If you're going to be there through October you'll have time to compare notes with your coworkers, and see how big this is.
