Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Wednesday’s call will layout the “group” designation

Wednesday’s all-hands will roll out the plan to put all employees in 1 of 3 groups. Come October 15th, everyone will either be group 1- offer letter to join Broadcom. Group 2- offer to stay on to support the merger and receive a hefty bonus package from VMware directly, or group 3- severance package / termination notice. Should be a fun week.

Thoughts on just receiving a Vmware offer with a start date of late October?

„Preliminary list is with HR and Legal.„
Says who? I’m a manager in Legal and no nothing at all. Stop spreading these rumors!!

Clearly you're not in the right legal department. The facts are: the list is done

We (those of us that still work for VMware) will hear the buckets for ourselves today in the All hands meeting.

I came out and asked my Director about the rumours and they were able to confirm the 3 buckets. WRT there being a list or managers having say in who stays and goes, here's my own story:
My Director said they were approached and asked about my performance. My performance hasn't been an issue so my Director was honest with leadership when asked. I was told that I should be in the top 2 buckets (permanent or transition) and not in the layoff list.
What was said about the buckets was that the transition period could be longer than "normal acquisition timelines" which I took to mean more than 6 months for a transition role, depending on where you are (that's MY speculation, nothing I was told). There would be a bonus at the end of the transition (was told that). No details but again, because the all hands is happening today in the next few hours, I'm sure more info will be shared.

And I fully expect there to be a LOT of questions in the Q&A today and a lot of spin put on everything. For reference, I'm in R&D in Tanzu. I am in Product Management. I am a remote worker in the AMER zone.

Good luck to all!

But we already know that's not the case here. Many managers and directors have said that they are being given no influence over who stays and who goes.

We still have one month+ to go... Broadcomguy also posted what his personal experience was; a late call Friday night from his boss to come up with a list on short order presumably after Broadcom handed down the edit on % of employees to retain, transition, or layoff.

Having said all this, my impression is that Broadcomguy is on the R&D side so things may play out differently if you are in some other function.

From that "Broadcomguy" post:

"YOUR Management will decide above three categories, typically Director level assisted by managers. Broadcom will provide % for above three categories"

But we already know that's not the case here. Many managers and directors have said that they are being given no influence over who stays and who goes.

Broadcomguy posted this over a year ago... This is Broadcom's playbook; no reason to speculate/bicker over what will happen in the next couple of months.

Man the amount of disrespectful replies from keyboard heroes.

I’m a director with a team and we were told specifically in last week’s people managers’ call that we won’t know the fate of our reports before the reports get their fate from Broadcom. That’s just a reality whether the paranoid wanna believe it or not. Outside firms and HR makes these decisions as happens in any big merger. Role relevance/any overlap, Current comp, performance history, DEI, age. All that has to be taken into account vs managers’ selecting favorite employees. Any keep or let go has to be justifiable in event an employee wants to sue. It’s not a surprise. It’s how it’s done.

No you don’t at all. I am a manager at the Director level and have zero insight. I wish I had since I deeply care about my team of 7.
As Betty let us all know, this is Broadcom‘s playbook, not ours.

Well, at least now we have time to look for other jobs. It is roughly a month before letters are sent. Not saying it is great news. Market is certainly not at it's best right now.

They only question is, will greed override good sense and make people try for the sweet sweet severance money?

It stinks that managers don’t have a say about whom in their team to retain, lay off, etc. But at least in certain groups like Legal, everyone got a 1:1 with a BC VP in order to present themselves (like in a job interview) and there were good managers/directors who prepared their folks for these 1:1s, worked with them on their LinkedIn profiles, etc. Now it’s all in BC‘s hands.

Really!? A downvote!? I was just trying to lighten the mood, and I really did think of Wednesday Addams when I first saw the title.

At least I am not trolling with intent to mislead or say super nasty things because this is anonymous, unless you really think they’re we are going to segregate the vampires from everyone else…in which case I deeply apologize.

I don't think townhall is proper term either, as it discriminates against metrosexuals who live in cities. Townhall is also insensitive towards primitive people who live in villages or maybe not in villages at all (think caveman people).

Not all roles will be around. They have already said countless times that cuts will happen to redundant employees or groups they aren't keeping. Why would a manager have any input of say an entire division is getting laid off.

Post ID: @1swy+1oynOzoC

The “person” giving input is a decade of financial analysts that wrote Excel Macros which have been handed down the generations from one PE firm to another.

They remove those that cost too much based on their level and for what remains the algorithm uses the RAND function to meet the expense quota across a formula based on level, lower levels weighted more.

It’s what Silver Lake guys do for a living and Hock’s spreadsheet function is the best in the biz. They combined forced so expect a very efficient culling of staff.

It isn’t personal, it’s just an algorithm with RAND()

How the F else would you “choose” to fire 10K people over a year? Have a one on one conversation with 10K people?

Welcome to the real world.

I have had zero input in this process

If manager is not giving input then who is ? Someone has to give an input on if an employee is critical or can be let go. My guess is its the Sr,. Directors who gave the input.

"It was only announced to a large audience on Thursday. This is new confirmation."

The three categories scenario is exactly what was done for previous BC acquisitions. Been mentioned multiple times already on thelayoff.com/vmware. How Raghu "messages" this on Wed. will be interesting.

Post ID: @wrm+1oynOzoC

I would fully expect at the all hands Raghu and Sumit put Betsy on the spot to tell the broader company "Broadcom has a different operating model" and "staff will be informed which category they fall under in the coming weeks" and "Broadcom will inform the employees directly and bypass line management functions as they have a different operating model". Raghu will have his wild drooling smile, Sumit with his syncopahnt face counting his millions for nothing, and Betsy on the verge of tears because her VMware plaything is getting crushed and turned to dust by Hock and all she can do is watch.

Raghu, Sumit, and others in mgmt don't give a flying fu-k about the employees or legacy or anything else. This is their narcissistic payday and they are just looking to cash those checks. Betsy has been the only one showing emotional connection with this and as much as she did a bunch of d-mb stuff, hats off for at least caring...

If you are an employee, buckle up for the biggest re-write of VMware's op model since its' inception and if you're not up for an Oracle+++ work culture of bleeding clients for their use of the tech, make peace with the fact you will be making a professional move shortly, either forced or voluntary; and find what makes you happy and engaged whatever that is.

VMware is dead and it ain't coming back.

Not exactly. Those articles refer to companies that invited the impacted employees to a meeting that was solely to lay them off.

It's speculation, but I doubt VMware will invite thousands of global employees to a single webinar.

Wait, did you think someone even thought that? Announce each person in a roll call on an all-hands? Of course not.

Actually some companies did that.

This has been already shared and discussed few weeks ago

It was only announced to a large audience on Thursday. This is new confirmation.

The 15th is not a definite number. Someone saying that number. The guidance was "mid-October". Wednesday is telling the company that the groups exist, and each person will get their role in mid-October.

There are actually four groups. The fourth is a category of "there are weird local laws that we have to work with so we may not know that employee's fate by mid-October, or even by acquisition".

Do you really think they tell you which group you are in on an all staff with 1000s of staff on

I was thiknking more around the lines of .... they announce at all hands the three groups and maybe 1:1s will be done after ...... im not expecting for this information to be announced at an all hands meeting with thousands of attendees.

Does that mean by Wednesday this week, we will know if we are group 1, 2 or 3?

Likely just a confirmation that there'll be three groups, not who is in what - Do you really think they tell you which group you are in on an all staff with 1000s of staff on and 100s of different local legal requirements ?
