Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Official Log of VSP Offer Acceptance

I thought it would helpful if we have a single place for people to post their offer feedback along with their years of service. Maybe we can start mapping out how generous (or not) management is being with the offers they accept and deny.

Include:
Months requested,
Accepted or denied ,
Years of service ,
LOXY or LAPC

Quantity of unvested LTI is likely a factor in the equation as well. If Oxy let's you leave, they get to release that liability from the books.

Note in the Q&A it says the decisions are made by executives / senior mgmt and not middle mgmt. meaning you may be extremely valuable but if you bid right your immediate line mgrs will have no opportunity to make a case that you need to stay. If your bid fits executives’ parameters it will get accepted. And Vice versa.

Your grade level may also influence how many months pay?

That’s a great point about perception of performance. Some of the decision will definitely be based on how badly management wants to keep you. Even a low offer could be rejected for someone that has unique knowledge or skills. Same reason they didn’t offer it to GOM and other groups. Those people are much safer from layoffs because their knowledge is valuable and there isn’t anyone within Oxy with extensive experience to replace them quickly enough. So, if you are applying because you are afraid of being laid off later, that may not necessarily be a bad thing. Of course, if you want out no matter what then it is a bad thing.

I would not be surprised if more people don’t step forward and except 8 to 10 months to avoid coming back with the virus still out there. In reality not many places give 6 months for five year employees other than the oil industry. When they do have layoffs I would think a five year hand could get 3-4 months, but they will be able to apply for unemployment. We are supposed to find out our return to work dates starting next week, so things may pick up with VSP acceptance if less than a year requested. Also, this is based on management approval and I doubt management will approve the top workers.

The culture of oxy really s—s. No matter if it survives or not, no good talent will want to work there. There will be an exodus. Some with vsp, layoff, and most definitely once job market recovers. Sad how this once great company has become. Look at the Middle managers. That shows you what c-ap is stewing. Oxy s—s.

That was their plan.... to find and exploit those willing to go for much less than they are worth. Savage tactic but as you know there are so many people who lack the courage to stand firm and demand respect. Imagine all the people in such a bad mental or emotional state who asked for only 6 months or less.....

From the comments here, which I have no trust, only 6 to 8 months offers have a chance of acceptance. If so, what is all this story about? Another foolish movement from management?! Who would ask for 6 months salary with no benefits in this market?

@1hnl+14XPz0vc yes agree. The catch is that they can send you on furlough and lay you off and then get noting. : /

If you haven't heard back in 24h it is because your offer is a tweener. Not good enough to accept yet but not bad enough to rejected out of hand

I’ll get 6 months if they lay me off involuntarily. Then, I can file for unemployment. Why would I ask for less? On the other hand, I agree that 24 or 36 months is beyond the realm of reality.

LOL at all the people thinking they will get 24 or 36 months. Get a GRIP. You MIGHT get 5 or 6 if you’re lucky.

I agree with some of the post. Seems like some of these posters are just making up ridiculous things. Not sure how this is a joke, when it comes to your paychecks and looming layoffs.

If you're relying on an anonymous layoff board for severance advice then you are too stupid to be employed to begin with.

Man- Harder and harder to believe some of these numbers. Who gets 36m from Oxy right now? Who puts in for 3m? Smells like both sides are using the anonymity of this board to game an already confusing process.

I don't understand why people are going in with so few months. Only thing I can think of is that you really want out of oil and gas or you're willing to go anywhere to get another job. I don't think any LAPC would go in with less than 12 months unless you just need to be out of the business for personal reasons. LAPC can continue to work for another 26 months and there will probably be some pretty good opportunity in the company once we start to rehire again.

@1gkc+14XPz0vc With respect, why did you ask for so few months? I assume you have something else lined up and you're taking a nice cushion on your way out. If so, great job.

I’d imagine position is important. Someone who works in ops is more valuable right now than someone who works in drilling. Perhaps just a very simple comment on which group you work for/support.

Layoff didn't post the full salary scale in my previous post ...

Less than $75k
$75 - $100k (+/-)
$150k - $250k
$260k - $350k (+/-)
$400k

To reiterate what others have said: the log is only helpful if you include salary range. This seems like a fair scale:
$400k

We're all in a really vulnerable spot right now having to bid your livelihood. This thread is testament to everyone's ability to pull together in tough times and help each other out!
