Thread regarding Cengage layoffs

Return to Office - Sept 9

So much for remote-first, eh? I moved away from Boston during the pandemic. My kids are settled in school up here. I can’t just pick them up and move back. I also can’t afford to.

@5nil+1rR39ffo what kind of private equity kool aid response is this?

Coming into the office so we can sit on virtual calls with people not in the office is such an innovative disruptor. That’s sarcasm if you can’t tell.

Greetings,

I sympathize with your situation. However, conscription into the Cenforce requires you to become a disrupter. You effected change by moving away from home base, and you should be commended for this. It would help if you now showed that you're adaptable and your in-office presence is scalable to meet the needs of students and educators.

Full Stop!

"It’s amazing that people actually believed that wfh would be permanent and made huge life decisions based on that. Wow."

At other publishing companies, WFH IS permanent. The companies downsized their office space and there are no longer as many offices to even return to. Oh wait, I forgot - Cengage is not a publishing company. My bad :D

This thread, like most others, is clearly among a group of people who don’t even work here. Otherwise you’d just open the email in Outlook and every question and misinformation in this thread would be immediately addressed.

@1wpa+1rR39ffo Did you move less than 25 miles away? If not, you’re fine.

Yes, people who live within 25 miles have to come to the office 1x per week despite the fact that common colds exist. The horror!

@1afh+1rR39ffo From all the messaging I heard and read, we moved 'virtual first'.

@1afh+1rR39ffo - “Making big life decisions” implies that it’s a choice. Moving away from a high cost-of-living area during a pandemic is not always a choice. But thanks for your empathy!

Wondering if this is a stepping stone to going back full time.

You don't have to if you live further than 25 miles or were hired as remote.

I’m deep in Kentucky! So I’m supposed to drive to this place called Mason? Where the heck is that? Gas prices are way up! Just to get to Ohio/Indiana is 20-30 miles! What are they thinking!

This applies to people who are within 25 commuting miles of Boston and Mason office. Do you live within that distance?
