Thread regarding Sears layoffs

33 Kmarts, 24 in the U.S..

FINALLY! I feel like a kid in a candy store who just got off a starvation diet! I haven't had a new Kmart list in MONTHS, finally I get a new one. Normally I don't consider lists without a link, however, as another poster posted, I called the store at 909-866-9200 and the lady confirmed they are closing in February, so that's equivalent of a link, for now, as anyone can call and verify this. I will contact local media in the area to hopefully generate an external link. I THINK THIS JUST MIGHT BE THE LAST US MAINLAND SERITAGE OWNED STORE! Ron Knows more about that stuff though. Oddly, there are no closing jobs listed, nor is this closing listed in the sb360 website here:

https://www.sb360.com/select-projects/events/

Not sure why. But the promising part, is that these closings usually come in bunches, so hopefully we get some juicy boom boom blasts ASAP, as I have been going through severe closing withdrawal (until the 7 glorious Sears closings were announced around November).
So please, anyone with any further Kmart (or Sears) closing links, please put them up, so myself, or Ron, respectively can handle our business.

Anyway, long ranting soliloquy over, here is the new master command list for non-closing Kmarts:

We are now at 33 Kmarts total, 24 of which are in the US. I have changed my map to reflect this as well:

@1gpy+18jDvcPu First of all I haven't yet seen any evidence of Mayaguez closing. Secondly, that list is the silliest piece of garbage that I have ever seen! The guy who made it just blatantly plagiarized Jack's list, for one thing. Also, it was put in a spreadsheet form to make it look like an official Sears document or something, but it isn't. The third column just contains street numbers for crying out loud (like West Wood is 700 Broadway so this id–t just put "700" in the third column).
What a cheaply made list. Don't plagiarize Jack's hard work by making cheap imitation knock-offs. And Brooklyn doesn't belong on it.
This list was always Jack's enterprise and will always be. Stay strong, Jack man, and ignore the haters! This is your project and I am just grateful that you allow me to come along for the ride! Stay safe, Merry Christmas, & happy listings, brother!

We were at 35 Kmarts remaining. Now with both Big Bear Lake, CA and Mayaguez, PR confirming their closures, we're now down to 33. Here's the OFFICIAL KMART MASTER LIST:

Sorry, below, I meant to write we are looking at potentially 7 Sears and 2 Kmarts in this round (if Mayaguez is true as someone posted below). Still a weak-sauce "round", but 9 stores outta here isn't too, too shabby. Hopefully many many more (or dare I hope ALL) of them in January.

Sure they are closing because they sold that property. But they will sell other ones too. Remember, I consider the 7 Sears also part of "this round". And someone below mentioned Mayaguez Kmart, although I haven't been able to verify that yet. But assuming it's true, we're looking at Sears and 2 Kmarts in this "round". And I'm sure there will be more. We're only in December now. Wait until January when the already Dead stores become even Deader. We'll get come juicy closings, soon, trust me. And Mayaguez makes perfect sense, because it is a town in PR with both a Sears AND a Kmart. As someone mentioned below, that's prime, low-hanging fruit, for an easy closure. They can easily combine both catalogues of items into 1 of the 2buildings and basically cut overhead in half. I would also like them to bounce Hato Rey Kmart because it's in the same parking lot as a Sears. No need for that. Start trimming!

If all you have is making fun of one misspelling, that's fine. On the other hand, I heard the conference call where they talked about the closing. The building has been sold that's why. It is the only one so far. It was even mentioned that Eddie does anything to make a buck and everyone laughed.

How can the closings come in bunches when there are no “bunches” left?

This won't be a bundle of Kmarts. The building was sold. That's the only reason they are closing. If they can sell or amother store is leased, then they will close. It had nothing to do with sales.

A bit melodramatic post, to say the least.

Just as a big confirm for those that still doubt the Big Bear Lake Kmart is closing, this is the local paper on the story:

Mayaguez PR is also closing (February 2021)

I am sorry to burst your bubble. Eddie will not follow the closing strategy you outlined below. If a lucrative real estate transaction happens to come up in NYC, he will pursue that first ahead of everything else you mentioned. You have wasted time and effort writing each of those bullet points. You are not at the wheel, otherwise you would have bought the assets out of bankruptcy instead.

Yes, this is the last Seritage-owned store, of either brand, in the 50 US states. Seritage still owns two open Sears and two open Kmarts in Puerto Rico.

Kmarts that need to close YESTERDAY, along for an explanation of why: A. Long Beach, Silver Spring, Miami, because they are in towns with both a Sears AND a Kmart. Just consolidate operations into 1 building. No town is big enough for a Sears and a Kmart anymore. Kmart is like Andy Roddick, to Target's Roger Federer. He was a fine tennis player until RF showed up. Well guess what, Kmart? Roger Federer just showed up, in the form of Target. You lose. (Nothing against Andy Roddick who was a fine player in his own right). Sorry Andy!

  1. White Plains and Hyannis, because they are either at, or almost at, walking distance to a Target. Ditto about no town being big enough for a Kmart and Target.
  2. Marshall, Hamilton for being in 1-store states (along with Hyannis and Silver Spring who also have additional reasons to close listed above). Hamilton, especially is not within 1000 miles of the next nearest Kmart. Bounce these 4 immediately without hesitation.
  3. Either 1 or both of Kearney and Belleville NJ, because both these 2 Kmarts are practically walkable to each other. No need for 2 Kmarts about 1 mile apart.
  4. The 2 PA stores, Kingston and Willow Street, just for being so oddly located in small towns not near any other stores, making shipping not cost-effective. Ditto for stupidly located stores, like Bridgehampton NY, located on the eastern end of Long Island, not close to the other 4 NY, stores which are either in, or adjacent to NYC, or South Lake Tahoe, CA, which has no other Kmarts nearby. While we're at it, just close the remaining 5 California Kmarts, why not?
  • When all this fat gets trimmed, we will be pretty much left with the Southeast Florida locations (which apparently cater to some type of niche tourist market), the NYC stores (which stay alive due to the sheer volume of being in the largest city in the country), and of course the territorial stores, which again, operate in a niche market where the demographics have some affinity for the Kmart brand which is all but nonexistent in the US mainland, combined with the larger factor of WM/Target not being widespread in Guam/USVI, to my Knowledge. So if they really HAVE to keep some (and I wish they didn't), then just keep NYC, Florida, USVI, & Guam. Maybe PR, although with the large amount of Kmarts closing in PR, leaving just 4, it appears the Puerto Rican people are just about over Kmart, now. Good for the fine people of PR, they deserve better. Get to work, Eddie, I just mapped out your closing strategy for you, and I did it totally for free. Now move it!

Woops, type below, I meant "Pennsylvania lonelily currently sits alone", not "Pennsylvania lonelily currently site alone.".

Well, well, well, California, welcome to the 5 Kmart state club, you're now tied with New York at 5 Kmarts per state each. If y'all both can drop one each, both you states would be tied with Florida and NJ at 4 Kmarts each. Then drop further down to 2, then you'll be in the 2 Kmart per state club, where Pennsylvania lonelily currently site alone.
The 4 "M" states, MA, MI, MN, MD have one each. Look for those to join the vast ranks of "zero-Kmarts per state" club soon. Statistics are awesome!
