When meritocracy culture was replaced with DEI culture. Look at ELT... Diverse but clueless and no real engineering or silicon manufacturing talent.

@1gkm, this is a very good list- #2 gets overlooked too often. I would add: politically driven headcount actions- 1000 manager/ SET leading directly to the rise of BK and AB. Mid 2000's

  • Arrogance built during the pre-bubble days (late 90s)
  • Complacency where disaster was averted thanks to the Core micro architecture (2000s)
  • Failure to take the iPhone deal (late 2000s)
  • Failure to aggressively pursue and succeed outside of x86 (multiple times, GPUs and smaller, low-power processors)

These events planted the seeds.

The tipping point was PSO turning down the iPhone chip contract. But BK, RJ, MR, threw gasoline on the dumpster fire with the Maker reality TV show, charging bowl, wearables, drones, and woke DEI hiring and promos. BK insider trading and liquidating all his stock while ba----g his Intel honey in the 5th Floor RNB bathroom was Nero playing fiddle while Rome burned.

It went down hill once the paranoia was gone. A sense of "we can do nothing wrong" developed at all levels who never knew a hard fought battle. A large infusion, and subsequent career success, of people from a culture known for flattery and irrational exuberance further boosted this trend.

Putting BK, SA, and some fat man from QCOM into the leadership positions were wanton acts of vandalism. The coyote went off the the cliff into the cloud a long time ago. It looked down only when BK looked down his pants.

There wasn't a single point, but the seeds were sawn in the late 1990's when the meteoric growth started lifting random people into the positions of responsibility that was well beyond their capability. What followed was a natural string of failures (take your pick) to manage and grow the business that has culminated in the current calamity. Many of these people are still around, all the way to the top.

It's fuzzy, but approximately when AB became chairman, BK became CEO, and RAT became head of HR.
