Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

We are being led down a path of destruction

The current AI push from senior management and the directors will bring this company to its knees. These people are too old and out of touch to understand what this technology actually is. It can be utilized in productive ways by individuals that have experience using LLMS and have a solid grasp of what LLMS are and what they are not. You cannot vibe code our systems. You need to hire and train journeymen so when the seasoned experts retire you have competent people to take the reigns that actually comprehend what they're looking at. Script-kiddies used to be a bad thing, now we're building on the backs of something much worse. For any manager reading this, when has copilot ever told you an idea you have is bad? Or even offered a different suggestion? It hasn't, because these models are trained to retain users. And the best way it does that is through sycophantic praise. I thought we had intelligent people at least making decisions for us. After seeing that AI ignite training I now understand that we are in for a very tumultuous time ahead. For any coder on here, keep learning and cutting your teeth on the stack. You will be needed once our leaders destroy this company. And for the process and maintenance techs, don't let them make you feel inferior or easily replaceable. These systems are powerful but we need the creativity and problem solving of you to make this company succeed. My heart weeps for any young person getting into what used to be a very presitigious career path. Please do better for the sake of the families that GF keeps fed.

What’s really unfortunate is that a commitment was made probably 2 years ago, by a VP to the COO most likely, that AI adoption would save x amount of dollars (certainly in the tens of millions). Now that runway is running out (hence the hasty demand to leverage copilot in daily ops). AI will not have delivered the promised savings so the labor budget is where that “savings” will come from (but it will be publicly credited to AI).

TLDR: more will be laid off in second half of ‘26 to help a VP keep their $ promise to higher.

The silver lining is that all the middle managers that don’t do fu*# all will finally be exposed to the extent that it’s impossible to ignore their non-productivity.

I haven’t really worried about layoffs due to AI until now. With Snapchat laying off 1000 people and the double-down on AI, it’s finally hitting me. Execs don’t have to be right to do a layoff. They just have to think they are right when they do the layoff.

I think it’s cute to watch our leadership and managers cosplay like they know what they are doing. They try so hard it’s like watching your kids at the school play

I’d like to see a survey of who likes copilot and who doesn’t. My guess is you have a handful of pro users who can get a lot done with it.

But for the majority, my guess is that kiddos like it and experienced professionals don’t love it. Because 90% of our workday is sending fast emails that compile information.

Copilot takes a long to generate an email, it gets half the stuff wrong, and you still have to navigate all the tools to put together the info. Why bother? You spend 10x more time checking and paring down the email than just writing a sentence or two.

Behind closed doors, a lot of people complain about forced usage. These aren’t anti-AI. It’s just that Copilot is not very good and the use-cases don’t line up with what we do

@vx

Reading comprehension is dead. If the sarcasm here is layered any thicker, it'll be almost as bad as our SPC.

No our leaders and managers are best in business. They always put our interests before their own self interests. They are champions in the field of business and have never made a bad or wrong decision!
