Hitachi bought IBM’s HDD business for $2B. And there was at least one article in Japan surprised at the size (something akin to β€œare they betting the farm”). Hitachi had some good and bad years and sold HGST to WD for $4.8B

I would argue that without IBM/HGST, WD would have failed. We’d have a Seagate/Hitachi duopoly instead of Seagate/WD.

So it is possible to do this and make money.

As already noted, the Sandisk purchase is not one of those money making purchases.

Too bad WDC couldn’t get Micron instead of Sandisk. It probably would have worked out better.

company was making marginal progress with two BUs, so seems credit for recent gains belongs to Elliott & Apollo and improving market conditions

DG is better than ex-CEO. Most of issues people complained here are the consequence of the decisions made by ex-CEO.

WDC paid 19B for Sandisk nothing to do with DG but that did not work out.

β€œ still lag our competitors stock price, and they still pay their dividend”

STX market cap is $19.2B
WDC market cap is now $23.1B

WD is ahead by this (better) metric than stock price.

To be fair, a lot of this is driven by the split. And that was forced in DG.

If memory our investors set a target of $47. Which means they stand to make a lot of money. I suspect at an annual rate, this will be more costly than even junkiest of junk bonds. Assuming WDC could have found buyers for such bonds.

There is also a huge lift from the fact that all semiconductor stocks are going up. Part due to economic shifts and a big part due to the CHIPS act.

DG is putting the company in more debt, the market doesn’t know what the f it’s really like internally.

Maybe just maybe it’s going up because DG no longer in charge of the money maker portion of the company!!

Time will tell;
Your eyes on San Disk and see what the future holds with DG in charge…..
