Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

OXY Culture is a Cancer

I hate to say I partially agree with Karma troll on anything, but OXY does have a very cancerous culture. Especially in the land department. You better bend the knee to middle/upper management and both VPs of Land or you will find yourself in trouble! Now that we are getting 75% pay what really is the motivation to try at anything anymore? Guess I just need to do the absolute bare minimum to not get fired until we can all get out of this dumpster fire. L-OXY 10 years (stayed for the stability, what a bad move in hindsight)

Is Land important in unitized field development or just in single lease development?

@155 you must be an engineer. They are the only mo–ns that harass land all day and night with dumb and repetitive questions. Your request is filed in line with 100 other engineer questions and moved to the bottom of the priority list. Land would love for a few of you to be fired. Also, she did not leave on her own and it wasn’t to be a spin instructor. You probably still spy on her dance studio Instagram after all these years.

I have been at Oxy many years and have good friends in Land. Most of them work harder than you or any other role at Oxy. You wouldn’t believe the amount of work/constant deadlines/worthless meetings/worthless questions/phone calls/emails/micromanagers that they have to deal with. It’s not that your question isn’t important but there are 100 other ones in line too. Give them a break.

Go ahead and try to drill your little wells without land.

Land “Ownership” here. So many questions. Who will be my new boss? Hopefully my lead will have more than 2-3 years of work experience? When will my name be drawn to be promoted to land operations (this is a raffle system right? We learned that you need a degree right?)? Why do we have an IT department working for the VP of Land? Will we permanently work from home 100% as promised by JH?

Let’s be honest to our team. The half truths and constant back peddling is debilitating and insulting. I can write a book about the missteps, but at least my director send a weekly accomplishment email to my VP. We are Oxy.

Haha @155 totally worked EOR based on that comment.

But its sometimes true. I left oxy to work for a broker because oxy would hire out the work I wanted to do.

For starters, you need land to prevent you from drilling a 10k where there is no yellow on your pretty little map.

What do land people do anyway? Seriously.
Seems like more of a function for a domestic drilling company rather than an international oil company.

That’s probably true. They have promoted team leads, that report to land managers that report to land directors that report to two VPs of Land. So many unnecessary layers I absolutely despise working for OXY now. I was a very good worker too before I got jaded by the constant corporate bs. How about instead of cutting the guys that actually do the work salary by 30% you lay off one of the two VPs of Land or better yet get rid of the useless directors? OXY of course won’t do that, but OXY is also going to go bankrupt in 2021 when the 6B in debt maturities come due.

That's not limited to land. Oxy as a company likes yes men who do the bare minimum. Don't rock the boat, don't be good at your job or else you make others look bad.

The culture promotes and encourages mediocrity. Endless levels of management to basically have no accountability. I'm still trying to figure out what Sandy Lowe actually does.

I’m not sure who your Landman is, but in my group we bust our a*sses. At least we used to before the salary cuts and layoffs caused us to have to take on 3x the counties that we were previously working. And likewise you staying makes no difference to me. You are probably some yes man middle manager and you can go down with this sinking ship and that’s fine by me.

Land department. My experience from many years dealing with them is that they do the “bare minimum” like you said. Can’t get them to confirm a lease interest map or check on rights from the Quorum database. They always have to sent a broker to the courthouse to get things done. Can’t get them to read a land document and get feedback. So much lack of motivation that actually one landman left to be a spinning instructor! So you leaving makes no difference to me
