Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Charlie LeDuff does not like Ford or Farley…..

There's a white-collar guy at Ford who's spent the better part of a year teaching his replacement in India how to do his job.

The Ford employee's last day is next month, and the company demanded he sign a nondisclosure agreement in exchange for the honor of retaining his severance.

Ford CEO and President Jim Farley, who made nearly $23 million last year, seems poised to make sure last week's 3,000 white-collar job cuts are only the beginning. Another 5,000 white-collar jobs are on the chopping block as Farley makes the big bet on the electric future. Most of those jobs are here in Michigan.

I used to love Ford. If you grew up in Michigan, chances are you did too. You spent some time in an auto plant or machine shop or a parts supplier. The Big Three paid their taxes. That gave us good schools, which gave us good jobs which allowed us to pay back our student loans. Others went directly into the factory and made a good middle-class life. That's over.

I don't love Ford anymore because Ford doesn't love us. Maximum shareholder profit is now the immutable law. Funny how much of that profit comes in the heaping form of corporate venality and broken promises.

As one example, Ford received more than $100 million from the state of Michigan with the promise of upgrading its electric F-150 here and creating 3,000 jobs. Ford then pivots and lays off 3,000 people. A year ago, the company announced a major expansion of its engineering and technology hub in

India that already employs 11,000 people. Make that now 11,001.

For its part, GM was awarded $1 billion in cash and subsidies this year by the state in exchange for an investment of $7 billion and the creation of 4,000 jobs. But read the fine print. It really only requires a $3 billion investment and 3,200 jobs. And those jobs need only last six months.

By one account, taxpayers have rescued the Big Three to the tune of $120 billion in subsidies, grants and bailouts since 2000. Over that same time, household income in Michigan has dropped 7%.

Now we're left to scrounge. Ford's electric Mustang is built in Mexico, as will be GM's forthcoming Equinox and Blazer electric vehicles. Mexico now has more auto-industry workers than the United States, and yet Mexicans continue to pour over the border. Why wouldn't they, when GM pays them $3.25 an hour?

Back here in America, the average cost of an electric vehicle is $66,000. Who can afford that? The well-to-do, that's who. Their trendy vehicles built in Mexico are subsidized by the federal government to the tune of $7,500 thanks to Biden's Inflation Reduction Act. Unsurprisingly, Ford and GM announced plans to raise the price on their EVs by - you guessed it - around $7,500.

The appetite of the oligarchs knows no limits. In Detroit, Dan Gilbert gets a $60 million tax break for his skyscraper. Chris Ilitch gets a hockey arena paid in part with public

dollars and yet he shares no revenue. GM CEO Mary Barra got paid $29 million last year and leaves the RenCen nearly empty.

Meanwhile, First World people have been made into second-hand shoppers.

Those in the executive suites should open their windows and listen to the rumbling in the streets. Or pay someone on their security team to do it.

The update simply says “ Ford says the Bloomberg figure is inaccurate.”
That doesn’t mean the 5,000 more terminations is too low, it could mean more than 5,000 (which it does need to be for Ford to be competitive). Listen to the words used.

But the 5,000 need to be Family & Friends and half of the LLs, or it won’t save us.

Can the OP update the article with what's been updated online?

"Editor's note: This story has been updated to include Ford Motor Co.'s response to a Bloomberg report that it plans an additional 5,000 layoffs."

@hff+1iulOkaj They would flourish if they actually broomed all the useless parasites 50% of GSR and 75% of LL and then properly paid the useful people. But Ford consistently does the opposite retaining and over-compensating the useless people while shoving the most useful people out the door.

The move of jobs to India and Mexico has been in the works for a long time. We all knew it. However with my interactions with India they rarely had good quality employees. When there was someone exceptional they didn’t stay long. More common was an employee who overstated their qualifications and didn’t know what they were doing. Good luck Ford.

Us 🇺🇸 household buying power will eventually collapse and these companies can sale in India.
At Stellantis and I know my job is going to India next two years.
I am not teaching them much.
I would not buy Jeep or dodge products anymore. WL Grand Cherokee is the last American Jeep SUV.
After that you looking at India Design and verification.
Let's wait for quality reports and CR and recalls.
If one saves 10M in staff cost and loase 100 M in recalls and quality that is not very good business.
That is just what Fords doing too. Look at the products.

@kfj Don't be foolish. There is no way any company would be able to give their employees a 9% pay raise to offset inflation. (It would be nice.) They'd all go bankrupt.

@cir maybe they include alcoholics, Asperger’s, Narcissists, Psychopaths etc in the DEI metrics for leaders?

He forgot a few other things that people in Michigan keep wanting to ignore. Both Ford and GM have signaled, very obviously, that the "future" is not in Dearborn, Warren or Detroit. It is in Kentucky and Tennessee. The State Tax Incentives are desperate (and too little, too late) attempts to prolong the departure of the auto industry in Michigan.

You forgot to add the fact that most employees got the heafty 2.3% merit to help offset the inflation rate of nearly 9%....do the math, we lose nearly 7% while Ringmaster Jimbo and the rest of the Ringleaders are very well compensated.

Ford values diversity…yes! Then why is the CEO not a woman or minority? Kinda weird that a company preaching diversity does not implement their policy at the top of their management. I think it’s time for the CEO to go bu bye!

Farley's hidden message on Monday reveals what he's thinking: That there's too many vehicles currently sitting on lots waiting for chips and there are too many choices for options for new vehicles. So let's get rid of employees who design them and use the time to switch to EVs. Also, figure out what jobs can be outsourced.

Farley is not a likable person, and Ford Motor Company only exists to feed the equally unlikeable Ford family through dividends and special shares of stock.

All 100% true. Always have been a fan of his work. This petty much shows why government should stay out of business. They haphazardly put together these incentive packages, the big companies/fat cats know this, and take full advantage of it. Chances are the companies negotiate these deals using highly compensated lawyers whereas the current ruling party is just pandering for votes. The UAW as well has been weak sauce, no idea how it’s still a thing since they go lock step with what the company wants for fear of “we’ll just shut the plant down.” This country has devolved into peasants and nobility, exactly the opposite of its purpose. You have King William and in his court is the jester Farley. A small fiefdom. Then you have King Bezos, King Musk, King Buffet, King Gates…. And we wonder why we have no money… people like them have most of it… Our own doing with consumption, but at what point does this thing tip.
