Thread regarding Fossil Inc. layoffs

SAMSUNG & Google Smartwatch coop

Will the new cooperation between Samsung and Google for a Samsung smartwatch with Wear OS be the end for Fossils (Wear OS) smartwatch? As this is the last hope for a product that sells will it be the finish for the whole company too?
Another example for the miserable management as they sold the smartwatch OS knowledge for a penny to Google.

Just FYI, I wasn't involved w the deal but I do know the details of the $40M tech that was sold to G. It has nothing to do w WearOS. Not saying it wasn't undervalued, especially the team, but just want to get the facts straight.

As a matter of fact, I do think this deal between Google and Samsung is good news for Fossil, both as an employee and an investor...as for the rest I was simply stoking provocation for entertainment value and thankfully you provided plenty!! ;)) I will go chill now ✌️

goodtogreat was probably part of that "team" that dropped the ball and is on the defense.....is probably one of the ones that made/makes that place (901) totally unbearable to go to everyday with their "do what I tell you" attitude!
@ goodtogreat Let it go and chill!

@goodtogreat. Relax...we all understand that you live and breathe your "job". 🤣🤣🤣 It'll be oooookay.

But yeah, I don't think Fossil who has no say so in what Google does with their proprietary tech will be part of the actual PARTNERSHIP Goggle has with Samsung.

@confused - how on earth do you expect Fossil to feature in an announcement between two juggernauts like Google and Samsung?? Honestly people, Fossil is a rounding error for things of this scale, but a partner nonetheless...the same way Timex, Movado, TAG Heur, Hublot, Montblanc are as they have all launched Wear OS smartwatches in the past. Should we have them all in the announcement as well?? And as far as the amazing "tech" that allegedly Fossil sold for peanuts to Google , what do you all think it was great for that Samsung , Google or Apple are not able to do by themselves ten times better??? Good choice by management in this case to cash in some $$ until they could and pay off some debt while also unloading possibly good but wildly overpaid tech engineers for a watch company.

@goodtogreat I honestly do not believe the business conducted between Google and Samsung involves Fossil other than Fossil SOLD AWAYthe tech to Google back in 2019.

I believe somewhere it was ASSUMED that Fossil was included in the partnership between Google and Samsung. Fossil is mentioned NOWHERE in the GOGGLE/SAMSUNG news release earlier this week.

Honestly this is the best thing that could happen to our company...Google/Android is about scale and reach and Fossil has been a loyal and supportive partner which did already more than its fair share given it is not a technology company...i look forward to the next generation of Smartwatches with a now unified Fitbit/Tizen/Wear UI and capabilities - there is a huge market to gran and we can certainly play a role by contributing great fashion design and sharp price points. Remember that the vast majority of the World is on Android not IOS and has been begging for a good alternative to the Apple watch. This is great news now let s hope we can stay focussed and execute on this great opportunity.

"We already do great design, and now the software and chipset innovation will finally catch up. Enjoy the ride we're about to go on!!!"

I hope you're right, we've heard this echo thru the Townhall meetings for the past 6-7 years.

I'm not sure the remaining staff at 901 can fill half the seats of auditorium to "enjoy the ride".

Oh my, so many uninformed and negatively biased commentary here. If you know anything about Google's strategy of providing free software to the world and how it played out with smartphones, then you'd easily see that this will greatly accelerate innovation and result in MUCH better Fossil smartwatches. Apple launched the iPhone in 2007 and Google was nowhere in sight. 5 years later, Google started taking massive share of the operating system market by providing innovative but free software that allowed device manufacturers to launch products that could compete with Apple. Several years after that, Google's Android OS became 70%+ share of the global smartphone operating system market, including on all Samsung phones. THIS IS THE SAME THING....except, now these products are watches that people wear and therefore style matters more than phones. Innovation will accelerate and Fossil's smartwatches will greatly benefit. We already do great design, and now the software and chipset innovation will finally catch up. Enjoy the ride we're about to go on!!!

WHAT?!!
Samsung didn't buy a license, Samsung and Google combined technology... one of which Fossil sold for pennies to Google on 2019!

Ummmm, remember Misfit...Google received that Tech TALENT in that $40mil deal for Google.

i am not sure this is bad at all...it seems more reasonable to me that Wear OS becomes a better standard for everyone the same way Fossil buys or licenses a movement from Citizen or Seiko. Fossil was never going to be a "tech player" nor it would have the money to pay the talent it would need to be and selling to google the IP was actually quite logical...the best case here is that through greater scale and commitment Wear OS becomes a much better product than it is today and through that Fossil (and Movado, Timex etc) can use it to package it within their own brands and design. This is the same model that exists for smartphones where the world is split in two standards only, IOS and Android.

Fully agree w/ what’s stated here. The road to the end of Fossils smartwatch business was signed with the sell of its intellectual property on smartwatch technology to Google.
Who will be interested in an out of date smartwatch from Fossil anymore as I doubt they will get the latest fancy features anymore first? These will be built into Samsung and Fitbit smartwatches.
And agree this will be the end as the smartwatches where the last hope for a safe harbor. Probably GMcK and (unfortunately) many others will have to look for a new job.

Yeah I wonder which of the favorites at Fossil dropped the ball on that license share agreement. Bad management, lack of talent,etc.....that still remains at Fossil.
