I was a 29 with direct reports. First they moved my team to another manager then gave me a "high profile project" to work on. I was let go in the next quarter. I always had great performance reveiws but like all Optum employees, I was just a number.

The screen goes dark, the keyboard stills,
Forty years of code, of digital thrills.
Cortisol fades, the weight lifts free,
A layoff’s sweet release—now, just me.

There are plenty of level 30s that are labeled as SMEs and handle special projects and drive through unique, hot issues for leadership, and manage contracts and client management. I am one of them and have been for 11 years. If they cut us based on simply no direct reports, then this work will fall to others to handle. It would be alot. But so be it if it happens. Doesn’t do any good to fret or take it personally.

@c6 very likely. Look for another job while you are still ahead

I can think of some pretty useless 32's and ELT's

Will Home and Community product teams be impacted?

@c6 for sure, unless you are building foundational AI.

@e8 There are plenty of 29 and 30 roles in tech, at least that are IC roles. Do you think they are going to be impacted, too?

HCP here. All of the recent contractor hires and approvals are a result of the July 17 RIFF. Onshore FTE jobs are eliminated and backfilled with offshore contractors. Stepping away from Optum . My integrity (and sleep) can no longer tolerate the ongoing deceit.

The titles director, associate director, senior manager, manager with no direct reports need to go. They just paid speed bumps that get in the way of things provide no value

@a5 they do every quarter, bought, and dismantled, just like every other purchase they make. Shine up your resume, find something else where you may actually have some form of job security. I am. Good luck

Unless they do like they did last July and give an end date 2 months out.

Not disagreeing with your post, but the pattern seems to be RIFs that where employees have an end date of the first Thursday of the following month (so if that pattern is followed, July 24 would be the day).

Are you saying 29,30,31's without directs who also are in non-IC roles? There are plenty of 29's and 30's in IC roles, of course they don't have direct reports.

Maybe the 30, 31 without direct reports should have been the first to go years ago!
