Thread regarding Western Digital Corp. layoffs

What would make your work life better?

I see so many of you hate your jobs at WD. But what would need to happen to make you stop feeling that way? I'm genuinely interested to know if there's anything that would help. It doesn't have to be anything huge, even a little something that would make your day more bearable.

I was very happy when my coworker got scholarship for his son from WD.
best bonus.
Also matching donations.

Education assistance also best support. Anyone who studies in the night, does not quit.

my own salary I don't care about much as long as I keep the job.

@2jzb+1o anymore than those execs who flew off Pinnacle around the November ‘22 layoffs - privilege

No promotions, pay cuts, no 401k matching, no STI… honestly the only reason I am still here is because I’m waiting for my package.

Having been here for more than a few years, i can say I’ve seen the ups and downs, the overpaid execs, and the poor decision making. If history is any indicator, and now is the worst I’ve seen, the forecasted demand for HDD better start soon….

Tell DG that hanging out in a swanky luxury booth while laying off employees is a bad look. You can sell your obscene excesses on the open market and return the money to the company.

the day after layoffs please don't tell the remaining employees at a all hands that they are the most valuable resource. stop training the manager to tell employees this story.
just be honest.

@1byy lest we forget high performance drives lost to cut costs, likely yielding hundreds of millions $$$$ to our competitors who keep selling high performance drives

Lets see... All the Market for legacy WD products is gone. Legacy HGST programs still have a market. Do we still need all the legacy WD workforce that was unable to design and build and sell enterprise product? WDC didn't get rid of the workforce that created and built products that no longer exist. Sandisk is/was an obvious disaster. So what's WDC answer to deal with losing money? Cut employee pay and 401K and grossly underpay employees, while keeping BLOATED WDC management.

I would be happier if they paid more but that isn't going to happen. It seems like other companies have recovered but drive and memory companies have not. WD is not in good position to profit from the AI bo-m. It is actually the opposite. AI is not memory or storage intensive. Combined kioxia/wd will have headcount reduced by at least 30%.

treating people with respect starts with leadership and cascades, so when you work in an org where theere little interest in people development it shows in the managers

The biggest issue in my opinion, hire and train middle management to be more effective with their jobs. They need to learn people skills and treat people with respect. Almost every personnel manager i've interacted with at WD should not be in management. Some of them even exposed the company to lawsuits and settlements.

Pay the operators more than a burger flipper to help retain talent that literally is the back bone of the company.

Their ethics and compliance team are a bunch of mo--ns. Chasing after pointless sh-t while leaving gaping holes.

Their lawyers are just as bad crippling the company with poor decisions and preventing management from doing their jobs.

The IT organization is a cess pool of inbred family & friends hiring. The d-mb d-mb up top and his brilliant strategy to offshore 70% of IT. Now are factories have no responsive support. It takes days for issues to be resolved instead of minutes/hours playing the email tag game across the world. Open tickets get lost in the dust bin or assigned to the wrong teams, because there is no transparency as by design.

Many of our development engineers and operational IT support are gone leaving us with near skeleton crews. That talent drain is ki-ling us. Very unclear how WD will remain competitive.

They just sold most of their physical assets only to lease them back. They are buying Kioxia using bonds and adding more debt when they should have bought Kioxia in the first place instead of SanDisk. Always better to own the source instead of the final packager.

Get rid of all this DEI woke cr-p and corporate politics being crammed in our faces.

Treat loyal WD employees as respectfully as young minorities new hires. Equality should mean equal.

No more special minority events, no more linkedin posts about how special some groups are, and no more special guests at town halls that highlight a specific gender, race, or religion.

Please call my bluff and publicly announce WD honors everyone equally. I dont think WD leaders have the guts.

Hm, to start they could get rid of DG. Giving us back our 401k matching is obvious as well. Some things like bonuses being withheld make sense, as those are based on the performance of the company, however you should never touch your employees retirement/ future as a way to cut costs in the short term.

The fact that they pulled this 'lever' so readily is disconcerning.

The new incoming executives could have used the survey to find issues within the organization, but they made it too easy for Agents to guard the Matrix's false realities

The best thing the company could do fire DG and admit the mistake they made with him. He is being greatly rewarded for failure and that sets a bad tone from the very top.

Yes I do unimportant work like most people here. Hence I got so much time to look at comments. I am pretty sure everyone commenting here is in the same boat as me.

@xku+1 a lot of assumptions with so little information smacks of the problems people encounter at WD - so many no-it-alls that new ideas and people can be suffocated And, using your logic, you posted here, so it's unfortunate your work is unimportant

Most ppl who comment here do not have to do important work at WD hence they have so much time to look at comments and also comment. Hence they do not feel like they are important enough for WD to keep them around which might be true. They are not satisfied with low pay and no benefits. Hence higher chance of ppl here to get laid off so they are scared as well.
