Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Dell trying to transform itself w/ younger salesforce? Does this mean more attrition in February?

What I’m noticing:

  • Big shift toward high potential college kids in our Next Gen Sales Academy.
  • Not only does this training process focus more on emerging tech (AI, edge, etc) but also on financial and outcome-based selling techniques. Much more legacy EMC-style in nature (hopefully with less Boston frat boy swagger that alienated so many customers).
  • Younger college kids simultaneously delivers a blank slate for sales training purposes but, obviously, (tale as old as time), a way to replace older, more expensive tenured talent.
  • Huge push to drive low-margin end user computing business online and have field sales teams focusing on datacenter/edge/AI. Like it or not, there are still pockets of, especially, legacy Dell field sellers that spend far too much time on notebooks and Chromebooks.
  • big push of datacenter sales to the channel.

What I’m wondering;
Is Dell either getting ready to sell something or buy something? You have the obvious opex offloads built around rounds of layoffs and investment in younger talent. You have the maniacal focus on expenses right now. You have online push for client route to market. Yiu have the channel push for storage.

Some of it may be transitionary - market trends dictate a new way of doing business. Pay as you go storage consumption. The emerging success of Dell’s AI focused, gpu-laden server platform gives Dell glimmers of what’s possible in AI and also at the edge.

If I’m a Dell long hauler, I’m embracing what’s going down or getting out b/c it doesn’t feel like they are playing around. Dell’s changing.

But as a high performing but tenured salesmaker, I won’t say I’m not worried. I don’t feel old but I’m starting to wonder if I am too old in Dell’s eyes.

You will get a job. Just be careful never to join a company with the current culture .
Join a company which hires based on merit and doesnt have EMC senior citizens in it.

I would have a plan…get your network in order…know what is up on LinkedIn these days…update your profile and resume.

yes, another layoff is coming in Feb. Start looking for another job now. This is the Dell we all knew was coming - if I see Jeff Clarke trying to be cool on stage with a stupid T shirt on, I will pu-e.

I know the favorite method to kick out someone is to sabotage the perception of them by the ELT.
Irrespective of the work they contributed, the corrupt mgr will systematically scrape their perception with ELT in reguar mtgs. Tell the employee to give very short responses and deliverables to the VP . And these mgrs with tell VP that employee couldn't deliver that is why his responses are short.
The mgr should be spending time thinking of alternatives to grow business.
But he is doing this. Next year you will know how many will be wfr affected in the teams under him.

Some people who are 66 yrs old are not hirable. They know it. So their plan is to get others booted out everytime a wfr happens. This is done in conjunction with their boss.
This is why dell is stuck in this rut.
It is not able to remove the cancer

Have a plan to get out, before you get BOOTed out! GTM 4.0 is around the corner in Feb 2024! Lets face it, a restructure generally doesnt involve recruiting more people...

To respond - @1biv+1oXluAly

SOME older people (not all) havent adapted to change and have moved by themselves to other companies in the same way that SOME younger people have also sprinted out the door to other companies they felt met their needs.

Example. 2 older people left out team and went to SI's as they could get a better wage and a level increase, they also didnt like the constant changes in direction and focus.

Also example. 2 younger people left the team and went to other vendors after a year on the job, as they felt they were worth a lot more now they have done 1 year in a day job, and given the millions and millions they were taking PO's for there were worth it.

The door swings both ways and all ages are judged based on how they work well, adapt and engage. Ive not seen a single thing that says otherwise.

@1yba+1oXluAly Think your talking cr-p.
Grads are roughly €20,000 cheaper in Dublin per head.Maybe more in the UK and the rest of Emea.
This is a fact.
They also dont ask questions when managment treat them like sh-t and want them to return to site.

@1yba+1oXluAly : what do you mean by " people who dont work well with others".
People like you create false evidence and lie to mgmt about 1:1 mtgs with co worker to create a negative input about him. You guys want the coworker to be removed, so you create a narrative of "dont work well with others".
Finally Karma will take care of you guys. Dont ever think that anyone in this planet gets away by doing bad things to others. Life holds everyone accountable for every action- good and bad.

This is a pretty silly observation.

"Im noticing more young people in our Next Gen Sales academy" . .. dude. That is what it is supposed to do. Like the grad programs and anything else, they get bright young people generally and bring em in.

Now, as an older person, i was employed as well and faced no issue. In my team there are all ages and ranges. There is no move at all to replace us with kids because it is very very recognised from management that tenure and experience matters.

However certain older people dont work well with others and dont learn new tech. normally they leave of their own accord and go over to a company that more suits them.

There is absolutely zero evidence that the company is against older people. Its just not a thing.

New Grads started in Dublin this week.
I feel nothing but pity for these young kids.
Hopefully my name is on the next list.

Who are the EMC veterans that are even left? Most of the old guard has been forced out. 176 is basically college grads in romsey’s team.

You guys havent got a clue about playing politics. Learn from EMC veterans who have weaseled their way into the fancy teams.
The new teams have EMC that perform mediocre per external candidates, but have good "connections". They have made $ millions in past 3 yrs because they are able to kick out the new hires and retain their positions inspite of high salaries. They know how to manage the manager.

It’s all about operational expenses. As a first line leader in field commercial, I can tell the mandate is to replace higher paid performers with lower level OTEs. Leaders have been instructed to evaluate teams and control the comp. I am in the process of replacing and AE 3 and the max OTE is 30% below industry standard. I have been with Dell for going on my 12th year and this is as bad as it has ever been. Moral is at an all time low, we are not allowed to entertain customers, support is just awful. I can’t imagine a worse scenario to be in at the moment. My advice to anyone at Dell, have a plan to get out in the next 3-6 months.

Obviously. I see a similar trend to move my job to a lower cost geo. If you are a sales high performer, just go get another job and phone it in, see if you get a pkg in January, then quit.
