Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Back to a 5-point performance scale

No new ideas so let's just keep flip-doing back and forth on things that don't matter.

I'm sure there are gonna be a bunch of 2s given out, though, to send the message that Bill Brown thinks you su-k but we're not ready to fire you just yet.

@5hp probably a higher amount of 1s and 2s than even Mcnerney ordered to be delivered with heads on a platter. BB is deeply disappointed that so few have left when RTO was imposed by brute force.

Get ready for 1-2 ratings….there will be expectations that low ratings are dished out.

@5cj does it mean the raise is going to be lower than usual?

@5cj this is reminiscent of my days as a people leader. Unless an employee has already been given deity status from previous reviews, they start in purgatory (2 below average rating).

Have to say I saw many ugly shenanigans during this process. Some leaders schemed beforehand to to protect each others employees and teamed up to bash an employee they didnt even know so that the poor overmatched leader got stuck with a couple of 2s.

This was very common during Mcnerney days. And if the 2s were canned during Jimbos next sacrificial offering to Wall Street to meet quarterly expectations, they were in risk of being dumped down to 1s which was worse than coming back with an STD on Chris Columbus ship. You were toast for sure.

BB is going to love this bloodletting. Oh and today he's probably already called it a day from his WFY (work from yacht) Friday. Must be nice to make 20 million and do nothing than bring misery of the unwashed masses. Minnesota Nasty

A little bird told me that this year, all employees will start with a 2, and it is up to their boss to convince the others why the employee should get a 3 (meets expectations).

@355

Yeah what is needed is more freshly graduated McKinsey MBA types who have never created or manufactured anything and view 3M as a some hypothetical widget factory with a series of knobs, dials, and levers that can all be adjusted to optimize financials. New product ideas can come straight from 3M Navigator.

For sure the year end cuts are coming. Area VPs have been asked to prepare the numbers.

@1bg there's a simply philosophy when parceling off pieces of a company, whether via spins or selling it to another company. REDUCE COSTS. In the eyes of wall street, this makes a spin or sale "more attractive" (in theory but not reality). A promotion freeze is easy. Saves money now and perhaps later on severance costs. Throw in 2 percent "merit" raises for 2026 and BB can pat himself on his back whilst on wining and dining friends on his Florida yacht. Layoffs? Just check out his history at his former company. He got one of the worst employee votes on glass door. BB cares about his wealth and his cronies. He is still probably seething that Bryan at SOLV is getting 40 million to his 20 million. Like Bryan last year, he will churn out a bunch of Christmas "bonuses" in the way of RIFs. Glad I'm out of this zhitshow.

Heard Quarter4 promotions have been put onhold and words have been circulating that BB is asking for headcount actions. Beware.

@1ac percents are arbitrary. It will depend on how many people BB wants to fire in case people don't leave to a soft job market because of RTO. My guess would be 10 percent (minimum) 1s. That give BB and easy 10 percent layoff target. Then 20 percent 2s. Some of these 2s are next year's 1s.

Minnesota Nasty strikes again.

Is there any mandate about % of people to be given out 1 or 2s

When you are already aware that the employees are considered the "enemy" (earlier commentary on the 3M Mines post nailed it) it doesn't matter what scale you use as long as there are options to hurt the "enemy". A 1 or 2 on a 5 point scale is no different than a 1 in a 3 point scale. This process is not intended to improve poor performance it is SOLELY intended to bully and push out good people who are trying their best to manage a poor situation to the best of their abilities. BB is here and only here to disperse the pieces of 3M in anyway that can bring him more money personally or bring more money to his sailing club/consultant buddies.

@m4 somehow Kearney must still be snooping around and collecting contracts set up by Tireman before he "retired" in April. BB doesn't care as it's beneath his concern about millions going to consultants. BB also has cronies in the consulting world. That cut to retiree medical? Why BB needs the cash to replace the Honeywell guy who "left to explore future opportunities". And wee Pete isn't it scotch time by now. Or are you still perusing this place to see how much we don't miss you.

They should hire Kearney and Dom to figure out the best rating system. What would Tireman do?

by

Post ID: @m4+1k74hrt76

No way they would reintroduce bottom ten percent. They want low rated employees to quit in disgust versus giving them a chance to improve.

3M only recognizing 1-5 on a 5 scale rating. They are discriminating wthose who view math, science, numbers, logic and everything believed by humans since Babylon. Sue for discriminating against everyone who doesn’t believe in the same. Sue, sue, sue. Everyone can reinvent and believe in anything they want

The old GE way to a tee would be to reimplement the “bottom ten percent” requirement. Those folks get put on corrective action with six months to straighten up per an agreed to plan.

Look for BB to drive and mandate larger numbers of 2s (below average) than even Mighty Mac drove when he brought in the GE plague. The 1s (unsatisfactory) are toast. Today's 2s become tomorrow's 1s. BB is going to get that 20 percent headcount reduction before he spins the company off into pieces one way or another.

This system did more to divide leaders during the closed down "calibration" sessions than any other mandate I've even seen. Expect some knockdown dragged out fights (verbally) while this system leaves a lot of employees wondering when the Grim Reaper will make an appearance at their desk.

Wait until the 1st round of calibration doesn't provide enough 2s for BB. Will never forget these moments when "leadership" told us we have to offer up more 2s as human (career) sacrifice.

This will not end well. Glad to be out of this hellhole environment.

Whatever system we use, the quotas will have to be distributed across all grading levels — whether it’s this one or something else. It makes no difference — you’re either a top contributor or you’re not. And if you’re not, then you don’t deserve a pay rise. A 1 or 2 means exactly that: nothing extra. With BB’s apparent desire for people to quietly leave, you’d better be a top contributor — otherwise, you’re in trouble.
