Thread regarding Sears layoffs

34 Full Line Sears and ~50 Kmarts (we know it’s 43)

https://www.forbes.com/sites/warrenshoulberg/2020/05/24/transformco-shocker-only-34-full-line-sears-and-50-kmart-stores-are-left/

Where are they only getting 34 stores from? Thought there were 80 something left.

Warren Shoulberg is a former sears employee who was terminated. He has made it his mission in life to print half truths about the company and attack Eddie Lampert. His article says there are two kmarts in Michigan for example, there’s one. He doesn’t get much right himself.

He is blinded by his hate. Sad.

The 132 remaining stores is the correct number at least until we receive all the bail out money Mnuchin promised.

@1vck+157DY9JD https://www.sears.com/stores/california.html lists only Hayward and Long Beach. I don't know if either one is actually open yet. Before Covid, there were 18 Sears stores open in California.

The list of open stores will only grow smaller.

Maybe it's a case of if the store isn't listed it won't be reopening. They might have updated it to reflect the Sears stores that will reopen.

I can't understand why when they updated it they didn't remove the Outlet stores as they are no longer part of Sears and have been rebranded.

I think the numbers are even worse than what the article states. The website lists 34 and 50. We know that there are less Kmarts than are what are on the website. We also know that lots of IT is furloughed. That means the website hasn't been updated to current stores. There have been more retail layoffs than at any other time in history, and we'd be deluded to think that it isn't going to be even worse for Sears and Kmart, which shuts down more stores in a typical month than JCPenney does in half a decade.

The PR person is probably on furlough.

What does being a private company have to do with anything? Even girl scout troops get out press releases, when they want to spread good press or correct bad press. Let's face it, Sears has no good news to get out, and if they wanted to counter this they could, but the truth is probably even worse than the article makes it out to be. We know that corporate doesn't even care enough to have the IT team keep the website accurate, and it's conceivable might not even be a single person at corporate who canonically knows exactly which stores are actually open these days with the state of things. Eddie and his lieutenants have certainly proven time and time again they are incompetent nincompoops who have no clue as to what's going on with the state of the company.

My store is not open and it still shows on Sears.com as closed. So sears.com is not a good source.

@1hka+157DY9JD Since they are a private company they don't have to do any press releases.

Sorry your wrong. They did not take the store of the store list on Sears.com because of Covid and then adding them back as they open up. All the CA stores are on Sears.com and none of them are open for business as of 5/24. They were never removed from Sears.com.
There are only 34 Sears stores, this is an accurate number.

There's a really easy way to resolve this. Sears could issue a press release saying otherwise. They won't though, because there will be less stores than this soon, and there no budget for this. All of marketing has literally left the building. If you want the job you can submit your application.

Looking at the Sears.com store locator is not a good way to determine how many stores there are. Sears removed almost every store when they closed for Covid-19, and has been adding them back gradually as they reopen. Not every state is allowing department stores to reopen yet.

Please be advised the Penn Station NYC Kmart closed in April. The current US mainland number of Kmarts as of early June with the MN location closing will sit at 32. 11 territory stores remain currently, for a total of 43.

@1amh+157DY9JD It is par for the course with this company. The left hand does not know what the right hand is doing and vice versa.

Pretty sure the current counts are as follows:

Sears (full line) - 82
Sears (small format) - 7
Kmart - 43
Total 132 stores

Not sure what the current count is for Sears Hometown.
This includes stores in both CONUS and outlying territories.
I guess Transformco is such a failure at updating its website that it cannot even provide an accurate list of its stores. Sad!

34 is the mainland US locations probably. Are they counting the Penn Station location that's closing? I haven't seen an announcement from corporate about that one. There are others as well.

It's pretty pathetic when a retailer refuses to answer how many stores they currently operate. That'a new low even for Transform...
