Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

The quiet before the storm

In late 2025, U.S. rail freight saw a significant downward trend, with reports indicating at least nine consecutive weeks of decline in weekly carloads and intermodal traffic compared to 2024 levels. The worst drop since 2020. Will 2026 continue the drop or rebound?

Everyone knows what will happen to shops, yards, and everyone that supports them. The Management will be cut, then the management will inventory the jobs and then report back what needs to be cut ✂️
And then the back lash of the loss of jobs will create another excess of management positions.

Maybe Jim Vena will give Donald Trump another donation for the ball room and he'll give you guys a buyout ?

Does your party support unions ? You probably vote against your own self interest.

I just saw an article stating domestic production is up and imports are down due to tariffs. The trade deficit is back down to the 2009 level also which is good for the country but maybe not so great for shippers. So it would make sense that rail volume will ease as all those containers aren’t full of import $hit! As an aside, do you remember when the party the union supports wanted more stuff made here? Now all they seem to want is illegal immigrant labor and cheap Chinese goods.

My guess is that it'll continue. Vena has been back at the UP for two and a half years now, and he's made promises that he hasn't quite lived up to. The UP submitted their merger application and now every other class 1 RR is calling out the UP for the omission of key details in the merger application. Vena absolutely believes that the other class 1's are only doing that because he thinks the class 1's are envious, jealous, or whatever you want to call it to prevent the merger from happening. I think the other class 1's are calling out the UP because they know Vena is full of sh1t and this merger is going to have a lot of the same effects that occurred during the UP-SP merger. The UP stock hasn't really gone anywhere in the two and a half years that he's been back, even though he touted a $400 stock price. The merger idea came onto the scene, and still the price didn't go anywhere. He also claims that the UP is leading in safety, but derailments seem to have gone up at many locations. He puts out stupid feel good letters to the men and woman of the UP, basically congratulating himself, and yet claims how proud he is of the team. Ok if he's proud of the team, then what reward did they get other than laid off? The UP has an entire management team that I don't think could find their own a$$ with both hands and a road map. The executives themselves are most ignorant I've ever met. Everyone of them claims the UP is doing well, but are failing miserably to see the actual issues that the workers are facing every single day! In their eyes if they dont see it, then it must not be happening and don't you dare report it either. Every UP employee is faced with the constant threat of termination if little Vena and his dipsh1t executive team don't get their way. The carloadings are going to continue to go up and down no matter what you do. The consumer is what controls the carloading numbers. The right question to ask is how big of a hissy fit is Vena going to have if and/or when he realizes he's sc--wing up the company? How many employees are going to lose their jobs when he doesn't get his way? This merger is going to make everything at the UP much worse for everyone that's still there. About the only bright spot that I could find so far is that the merger will most likely be Venas last hoorah at the UP. If the merger doesn't happen, then it would be a safe bet to say that Vena will be gone very very shortly after the merger failure. There's just no way Wall Street and the board of directors will keep Vena as the CEO if this merger fails. I personally wouldn't be surprised at all if Vena got a boot in the a$$ before a merger took place. The UP is not the best in the industry in any way. Vena is in fact full of sh1t and every UP employee knows it. I'd be a bit more worried about the merger details other than the carloadings and intermodal traffic, but that's me.
