Broken Software Engineering Culture at Truist

Is it just me, or does Truist really struggle with software engineering quality? There doesn’t seem to be any real focus on learning from past mistakes or improving with each release. The same problems keep happening again and again — it’s draining and inefficient. At other companies I’ve worked for, engineers were quick to learn, adapt, and build better systems over time. It’s frustrating to see such a lack of progress here. Honestly, “you get what you pay for” couldn’t ring truer.

@158 - Truist blows. There’s really no poetic way to dress that up. Plain and simple. The culture? Absolutely abysmal. It’s like watching an entire organization stumble around in a pitch-black maze, hurling random ideas at the wall in the desperate hope that something might magically stick. And high performers? Please. They might as well be invisible for all the recognition or reward they’ll never get.

After years of watching this circus, I’ve reached a very comfortable conclusion: do the bare minimum. Nothing more. That’s the survival strategy here; just enough effort to avoid getting canned, no more than that, because giving this place your best is a fool’s errand.

And sure, some of us don’t leave. Why? Not because we’re inspired by the “PMV,” but because it’s convenient. The paycheck shows up, the benefits are tolerable, and inertia is a powerful force when the alternative is diving back into the job market.

Honestly, getting RIFed might not even be the tragedy they want you to think it is. Worst case, there’s decent severance for those such as myself to soften the blow.

@cn well they have tens of billions of dollars to spend on technology. they have also offshored way more than we have and would fire all the low performers that exist in this company. The leaders may be an issue, but middle management and individual contributors at this company can’t find jobs anywhere else. If they could, they would be gone. Just a lot of geniuses on this board that complain and aren’t good enough to fix anything. Everyone in this company wants to be told how good they are. Folks that try and fix something don’t last long. It’s an uphill climb. Folks don’t like being told the truth and held accountable. You can tell the culture of the employees by just looking at this board.
By the way, those companies also have tons of issues. They just have tons of money to hide them.

Ask yourself this. Do you really see Truist as an innovative company? Do you think the next decade of banking is going to come from them rather than JPMC, WF, or BoA?

Having a proper engineering footing is a serious challenge and Truist is not a serious place.
