Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

NRE / RE ? PIP?

d-mb question but I see a lot of people talking about NRE / RE/ and when they can and can’t PIP you based on how close you are to retirement. Can someone actually explain all these details to me? I am newer but not young so very interested.

You are in the phase of your career called "THE GOLDEN HANDCUFFS". Good luck. ExxonMobil management holds all the cards.

@151 there are several law firms that specialize in age discrimination.... Exxon has settled a few out of court... Need to Google....

I just got designated NSI. I'll be 52 this year & I have 15 years of service at Exxon. Crazy coincidence, I know. Surely someone has tried to bring a lawsuit for age discrimination, right?

I’m hearing that as NRE, you’re no longer safe and they can still PIP you. This was a new change this year. Can someone confirm?

@bt, I always thought it was 15 years of service. Did that change recently to 12?

@at

How do they make you leave, could you get a severance / incentive to retire early if you your full undiscounted retirement age at 62/65?

@OP since you mentioned you’re “newer” you need to be aware that just getting to 52 years of age doesn’t make you NRE if you don’t also have the 12 years of service at that point. It’s a combination of age and 12+ years of experience so that you’re basically 3 years or less from Retirement Eligible. Thus the term Near Retirement Eligible.

Look up goto\mrlp and everything will be explained. If you can reach 53 with 12 years service you are almost guaranteed a retirement. You will not be piped and can only be subject to documented performance counselling. NRE is the best because you can cruise it from then on. They will try to scare you and say you must improve but its a bluff. I have never seen in my 27 years at exxon someone terminated at the ages of 52 to 55. Notice how the employees that have their finances in order behave during the NRE age. I am one of those wealthy and ready to leave at 55 or older. You can still be fired for committing major offensive like stealing, fighting, dr-gs, g-ns and racial or s-xual harassment. Exon is so scared of age discrimination lawsuits they will leave you alone during this NRE phase. They will still try to f with you though and make you leave at 55.

Historically, between 52/53 and 55 you were safe from pips that could result in being fired. Younger or older than that range, you could be pipped , fail, and get fired. In between those ages, you are NRE and can be pipped but in a way that you can fail and not get fired. These days - who knows. The company has thrown any ethics out the window.

Basically the company is trying to get rid of all its older workers and avoid paying for a "layoff".
