Managers avoid firing people for poor performance because it is very uncomfortable and all of the ducks must be in a row to avoid getting sued later or losing their coveted manager job if the employee screams loud enough.
Yes. Managers are forced to meet a curve when performing rankings and calibrations. This is part of the reason that low performers are not dealt with accordingly. It's better to keep them on to meet a curve and give others a better rating than to perform the due diligence it would take to get rid of them. Your performance is not graded against your job description. If a team does have a lot of high performers, someone is getting shilled out of a good review next year. That's just the way Oxy works.
Life must be easier with your head buried in the sand. Of course you are ranked and rated. Both internally and with Oxy's peer companies. How do I know? Had two large boxes dropped in my office and inside was an HR report with employee comparisons against the peer group. Age, salary, years of experience.... Life is easier if you don't worry about such silly things.
I thought we were always ranked....

No, Just the HR reps that shows up on your floor early one morning with a stacks of envelopes. Then you sit in your office and wait. A couple of hours sweating should give you time to remember you were once warned this could happen. Hope you make it to lunch and you are still employed. Enjoy.

What they need is to participate in a near extinction event. Previous generations did and it usually made the ones who survived far more focused with their profession and finances. This bunch has yet to have the bo-m drop and I can't wait to see how they fare.

AT&T morphed into a cellular giant. Oxy choked on a chicken bone and is praying the NASA scientists will help squeeze just a little more out of the Permian. COP just had another round of layoffs...When will yours be?
@yv Ray got the company going in the right direction jettisoning companies that were not in the company’s core interest. However, he may have gotten involved in to many MENA JVs that weren’t that profitable. After all, he spoke the language.

Oxy was a real hydrocarbon exploration and production in the last century. Almost embarrassing to see what it has bloated into.
The company was much better when Dr. Ray was at the helm.
If you’re worried about forced ranking then you are actually worried that you aren’t truly deserving to be in the top 10%-20% and the fake top rating you’ve been skating by on will be allocated to those who are deserving to be in the top 20%.

There has always been a ranking of the employees. The bottom 10% are at risk. The problem is finding out where you are in the bunch. Only the HiPots know their positions. The rest is just a guess.
@vz this dude doesn't know what he is talking about. He is running his mouth for entertainment value. OXY stock is no worse than any other major oil company stock. Look at the charts... most are trading slightly up from their 52-week lows. Why don't you go to Chevron's layoff site and run your mouth there. Thanks in advance.

If you had this much passion at the office, the stock might see $45 again. Buying and producing other companies grease is not a sustainable business model. That's why you keep coming back for more and digging a deeper hole to live in....
@vc No you don’t. Don’t you get it? APC was a bad deal because the purchase price was very bad, and the timing very, very bad. Having or not having reserves was not the reason the company is still suffering. Being good at finding good fields may be something you can brag to your friends and relatives about, but so is producing in a cost effective manner. Debt may ultimately be the nail in the coffin for Oxy, but being good at finding hydrocarbons will not. Unless you have something other than your opinion, best to walk away from that argument
You need to be a company that doesn't need to spent nearly 70 billion dollars buying competitors proven hydrocarbons to call yourself a viable o&g company. You will end up like Marathon...swallowed up and forgotten. Not much of a business model. Here's hoping we claw back some stock value when Oxy is acquired.
@v1 but you don’t have to be an expert at exploration to be a successful production company. Another thing you don’t seem to realize is that you don’t have to be good at production to be a good exploration company. You need to have a better understanding of the entire industry to be a credible critic. You may not know it, but some companies do well at only midstream, others at only refining and still others at commercial sales or even consumer sales. It’s a big industry out there buckaroo, much bigger than you can see from under the rock that you live.

@v1 the entire industry is in consolidation mode. Look at the number companies Chevron has acquired over the past five years… same with Exxon Mobil. OXY is no different. There is not a bunch of new opportunities to be discovered. The major oil basins have pretty much been discovered and the only way to grow is acquisition. Again you don’t appear to understand this industry. I don’t have time to explain it to a no-hoper who clearly doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
As best as I can tell, you have spent 10's of billions of dollars buying other companies production and certified reserves then try to produce it more efficiently... You haven't found your own grease since the last century....I'm not obtuse, you do not know what this company does. If you had to organically find hydrocarbons, Oxy would have been a footnote of history long ago. Take a look at the last several acquisitions and ask why...

@r5 are you serious or purposely obtuse? OXY produces and sells 1.5 million barrels of oil equivalent per day. That is how OXY makes money. OXY has great assets that deliver high returns. Sorry you don't seem to understand the oil & gas business.
@td Not a good solution. Many of us like to gripe, insult, and complain, of course. But more than anything, we like to annoy. That’s what gets my motor going!

Please inform us how Oxy makes money. From a shareholders point of view I strongly disagree that Oxy is a profitable business. The only reason you are not in the garbage can of history is that debt you carry. What exactly do you do? Carbon capture / environmental warrior or an oil reserves acquisition /production company (You haven't been a successful explorer in this century). At least you sold the chemical division although it may have been one of the more stable and profitable BU.
@qd some mo--n on here compared OXY to Enron. Fraud and corruption were the issues with Enron. OXY is not a corrupt company so the comparison is stupid. OXY is not fabricating its financial statements. We know how OXY makes money.
Fraud and corruption ain't really the issue - or even the accusation.
Stupidity and incompetence has sent more "once thriving/viable" companies into the history books.
The resulting bankruptcy, reorganization, absorption and/or a slow fade to black - it don't matter. Fraud is not a prerequisite to getting sc--wed.
That's what is happening here.
Yet some buy into the narrative that all is well and you just need stay at the table, see another card to fill that inside straight (APC, DAC) and rake in the pot.
