I was told by my supervisor my potential is 27. Should I be worried about this or can I have an outstanding year and break that image. 1 year new hire out of SEC school.

FOP is used in promotion planning and also setting bonuses. If your FoP is 27 at an early career milestone, generally the estimate that you will end your career at about 26, maybe 27, so if you are currently a 25, you have one or two promotions left in your career. At each SG, you quickly meet max so you will (unless you move mountains to improve your FoP) likely spend the majority of your career with de minimus raises.
Depends on your location, degree and starting CL - it could be ok.
A US based engr - start looking. Someone who hired in as a plant operator (wage) or staff support, this is really good.
@100+1jtpgva1m - not talking about your GPA.
What about a potential of 36?
They tell you this to keep you chasing the dragon or carrot. If you do extra work, work hard, kiss a ss and drink the poison kool aid then you will ascend the ranks of exxon mobil. Its all lies to keep you working like a slave. You will always be deficient in some way because that is why they have the ranking. I have always been knocked down for stupid reasons. Others that were destined for greatness are coddled and protected from any criticism or berating. Ohh would it be nice to be a protected favorite hipo.
Give it another other year w a diff supervisor
What if I was told this spring I am a 34+?
Does this mean anything or just more smoke. 10 years into my career and campus hire.
I retired at 55 at CL 29. I never asked about my ultimate CL and never cared. What a crock of sh*t to tell someone what they are destined to be. I left the company because I got tired of this rat race.
As parents would we tell our children who they will be when they grow up? I hope not. If you play this numbers game, it will never be enough because comparison is the thief of joy.
You should be looking for a new job. Clearly EM doesn’t think you fit
To be successful here takes, lies, friends in high places and luck
You are sc--wed
Having a potential of 27 this early means you are deemed a little dull.
You should question your supervisor but they will probably tell you that it is your privilege to know this as potential is not normally communicated.
Typically it goes down from there, and like what others have said, your end career is probably a 25, which is max supervisor level. I’ll leave and find a place that will appreciate me more.
But of course if you know you are just another low motivated person, then stay by all means if this suits you.
A potential of 27 means u are likely peaking out at 25 .... if you are MPT w/ engineering degree and YEE less than 20, I would say, yes, you should worry about this. I would say by default it should be 29 (most ppl retire at 26/27)
They’re just playing cute with you. Very few people have any potential in this company
Everyone hired past 2020 is pretty much told that unless they’re a DEI hire. After 3 years, I’d be concerned if your end goal is C suite stuff. What this looks like long term (if real) is your salary would end around $300k, you’d still retire a multimillionaire and you could still spend you life as a SME without having to move to India and act like you love it. I won’t ever say I think all CL34+ people deserve it but no one can say they don’t sacrifice their personal life for the job as they move at the snap of their owning Execs fingers
27 is a low potential. They don’t see you as anything special and that is that. I am not saying there is no chance of it being raised but there os no chance of it being raised.
It doesn’t mean anything. Focus on maintaining your yearly performance and not getting PIP’ed. Most people will get PIP’ed before this so called potential happens for them
My potential was 27 until a few years ago then I was sabotaged and shot down. Now I linger at CL 25 and probably will retire at CL 25. I was given low visibility projects that were destined to fail. The hipos were given the big glamorous projects like cmv and lithium. It all depends if they like you and will push you up. Otherwise you will fall and fail. I was told at the end of my career I could be a cl 27 at age 65. I did not follow their plan. The plan was to become a supervisor and do their dirty work piping employees. I stayed a SME and now i am sinking. I was not good at kissing the managers a ss either and lying to employees. My stint as a supervisor was short lived. Ask yourself if you can kiss a-s for twenty years straight. I could not do it for even a day.
Most people have default potential for about 5 years. The default can change between 29 and 27. Don’t think think about it for 4 more years
Depends on your function.
Why not ask your supervisor “is this normal”?
It’s very common for early career downstream manufacturing MPTs to start with a low potential.
@a6+1jtpgva1m Most people in finance (US based) have a potential of 29. Are you saying that new hires are now either 27 or 34? I was told a few years ago by an executive that all new hires are starting at CL potential 29 and are reevaluated at the 5 year mark to either stay or move to exec potential.
For most new hires prior to 2020, the potential was CL-28/29 as the norm. Post 2020 responsibility was delegated at least two salary groups lower which translates to CL-26/27 as the highest potential for all non-executive track HiPO employees.
Bottom line, we save a significant amount of OPEX long term by delegating responsibility to lower salary groups.
If you are a properly degreed MPT, that svcks
