Greater Memphis jobless rate dropped to 8.9% in September
September's report shows 72,000 residents have found full- or part-time work since since April, the strongest hiring surge ever recorded in metro Memphis in any summer in any year.
Led by a hiring surge, Greater Memphis' jobless rate dropped in September to 8.9%, marking the first dip below double digits since the mass layoffs in March when the pandemic set in.

A new labor market study shows 9,000 more metro-area residents found work in September, raising the number of people employed in the metro area to 591,975, about 29,000 jobs shy of March's level just before the waves of layoffs.

In parts of the nine-county metro area, jobless rates have neared levels considered closer to normal in a sound economy. In the Mississippi suburbs, DeSoto County registered a 5.5% jobless rate in September. North of Memphis, Tipton County measured 5.6%.
