Curious to hear how much of hardware groups (ASIC design, system integrator roles or even reference board designs) have been affected with Qualcomm Atheros. I was planning on transfer internally, but those opportunities seem to have dried up. I work as part of customer engineering (for QTI not QCA) in the Bay Area and because of work life balance reasons in CE that I would love to work in QCA in a similar role if possible. But what I heard is that even transfers are being scrutinized now.

I am in San Jose, and since getting my notice, I've had one interview today and another scheduled for next week. Both are just from turning on the resume blasting spigot. The job market is great in silicon valley. The Q is the idiot who let me go, and even paid me to get out; couldn't have left in a better way. My goal is to land a job, and before starting, spend a month traveling and spending the big bonus of a package that i got. Good luck to everyone in the bay area; shouldn't take long for you guys to find a job either.
You might be spoiled by the abundance of tech jobs. In other fields, jobs are hard to come by and you often have to relocate. In those fields there are unions to hold the line on pay and benefit, because someone else is always willing to take a job for less pay.
I don't like referrals and was never referred for any of my jobs. If I see a job description that I like, I'll apply myself. It has always been that way. It's not a "pride" thing though my network is quite diverse. I'll continue to look for contract gigs for the next two years while I can have the time finishing up the dental pre-req courses. I'd already put away some money into my retirement funds, so that's out of the way for now while I am focusing on other priorities. The thought of having to look for a job every few years is really tiring. I'm out! Thanks. Good luck.

Good luck Anonymous56259, you'll do fine, it takes a bit of time but you'll get over the hump. Engineering can be tough and the dental office route might be much more stable career. Good luck..
Thanks for the support. I am heading down to SoCal (LA) and will give it another 6 months. Most if not all opportunities that I've come across were contracts. I seriously also think of leaving engineering for good and go back to dental school (maybe start taking pre-req courses next month). I was also thinking of getting a PhD to pursue a career in academia, but I am currently and strongly leaning toward "something" healthcare-related. I can handle financial stress and most other sources of stress, but having this anxiety of an uncertain future being in this field isn't healthy. Nothing is certain in life, but having my own dental office might open other doors. I am giving myself a second chance while I can still do it physically and financially. Good luck to all. It all depends on what you want to do (and what you can do) - if you are good with Cobol being in Charlotte, NC might be better than the Bay Area. Just saying... Also, your timing is pretty bad with last 4 weeks being very slow. Finally, if you are not getting any traction it might be a good time to hit headhunters, I am sure they will find you something (not sure how good of job it'll be though). Are you looking for big companies or smaller ones? Big companies will all be on vacation and may be just getting back(:, I heard smaller SW companies and Startups are hiring, I am not sure how it is for HW though
