Situational Leadership II

Did you guys have to go through that? Did you just start getting bombarded with ads for it on this site? WTF??? I think I did my SLII in the friggin' late 90's. I had no idea that Ken Blanchard was still trying to peddle that load of dribble!

All I remember was the stupid paperweight that I never looked at again. What a waste of time that was, eh? But I guess it gave HR something to do. They must get pretty bored having a manual that reads "Say you will 'look into it' and take no further action" as the response to every single situation.

What I remember most about SLII training was that we were broken out into groups at one point. A dean appointed herself head of our group, so her job was to take notes on a flip pad while we came up with ideas. This woman was an academic dean at a college and was fracking illiterate! I'm not talking writing "a lot" as one word or writing "lose" with two o's. They were "allott" and "loase" with this woman. And yes, English was obviously her first language. I walked away from that training wondering what the hell kind of messed up company I had come to work for. Well, I guess I found out, and an illiterate academic dean was the least of the problems.

Yeah, and when you get to M4 you get to do puzzles together.

Interesting tidbit. If any of you are wondering what SLI was, it was pretty much the exact same as SLII. The big difference was that instead of referring to D1, D2, D3, and D4 (employees' "development level" in their current job/task), it referred to M1, M2, M3, and M4 and called them employee "maturity levels." So if the whole thing struck you as being a bit patronizing, you were probably right. The whole concept is based on preschool principles.

Man, I loved SLII! That was the training where you chose your own Wild West adventure. Ha ha, nobody I knew ever "blew up the mine" but all of the HR people claimed they did to be self-effacing and put you at ease. "Wow, you did SO well! I blew up the mine! Oops!"

I think we were in the same SLII class. If I recall, you were an S1 and I was an S4. Guess who I am now? (no, not the janitor, don't be a wise guy)
