Thread regarding Corinthian Colleges Inc. layoffs

Will there be work later????

I am wondering , with all the paperwork we are made to do to get "hired" again by Zenith. Will there be enough classes to make it even worthwhile? They are making the adjunct involvement too unrealistic for the pay, most will do what I will do and just continue as before until they fire them. Everest has the lowest pay of all the private schools, but demands the most work. When will the adjuncts rise up and demand more pay?

Yeah, I saw the writing on the wall. When they started requiring instructors to act more like telemarketers, I got out. Good luck to those who are left to fill the void.

You're correct, 555; the PLs and PDs have turned into little more than a bad joke. Mine do a sort of lame "good cop/bad cop" act; the PL is aloof and plays God on high, telling us about penalties and claiming in the same breath that they're not meant to be punitive (how dumb does he think we are?). The PL is a constant barrage of bad jokes and forced, lame humor that falls totally flat with me; she seems to think it'll distract us from the bullshit they impose. Once I get another offer, I'm gone. "Thank you for all you do" — please!

To 65821 and 65690 (type X managers) you are the sole reason this school has fallen. No respect for employees and the only answer is always "just leave," as you constantly scrape the bottom of the barrel where you came from for more adjuncts. This school was very good once, and then the likes of you came.

Take care of the adjuncts and the good students will follow. Hire bozos like you and the school will sink.

Your jobs were saved and you're still bitching! IF YOU ARE THAT UNHAPPY QUIT. It's employees like you that bring the moral down more than any manager.

OP: Your problem has a very easy solution. If you don't like it here, GET OUT.

Seriously?!?! After that Ken asshole threw every instructor under the bus by blaming us for their failing students, you are still looking for respect and integrity?!?' Grow up. I quit after that. Gone. I make more, work less. NO outreach. His insult was the best thing that ever happened to me. Don't expect more than what you've already been given. Instructors at whatever you call yourselves now will never be respected for your level of degree and education and experience. They do NOT respect you. Period.

It might be the PDs behind it, but you can't treat college professors like call center reps and expect them to do their best - or put up with it. You will lose all your good teachers and be left with the ones who are just meeting the metrics. After today's "feedback" I'm already looking. I was offered the PL job twice and turned it down because I had a suspicion they would expect the PLs to do menial minimum-wage type work (like counting teachers' posts and reading their emails) and I did not go to school all those years or work in all those jobs to be turned into a freaking monkey. And I will not be bullied by one, either. 38 was a good start... now let's can the rest of'em.

555, it may just be their micromanaging PD driving them to micromanage you. Sounds like you are in the CS department.

I vote to lay off all the useless Program Leads. They do less outreach than instructors, teach fewer students, teach lower level classes, do less grading, and for the most part are a bunch of idiots. And now they are mini-micro-managers, counting our posts and pretending to "mentor" us with their mini-micro-minds. Have any of these people ever had a real job, or have they all been going to school for their entire adult lives? This is not how to manage intelligent, educated, experienced people. You can easily replace three PLs with one good instructor. Save a lot of money, and improve morale amongst the overworked faculty in the process! Let the PLs go back to circle-jerking about their dissertations and posting stupid photos to Facebook all day long... we have work to do.

To put it in perspective, Smarthinking pays tutors with PhDs $12 an hour. The jobs are few and the pool limitless. Every year out fine institutions graduate thousands of people with advanced degrees, when there are not enough job prospects. Adjuncts need the money to pay off loans, and will take whatever jobs they can.

For instructors, more like 60 days until layoffs. Spring Term begins the first week in April.

Rise up all you want. Pay and expectations will remain the same - or worse - as long as ECMC can find instructors willing to work under those conditions. When they cannot find enough instructors, the terms and conditions will change. With the shrinking enrollment at all career colleges (especially CCI/ECMC) there are likely plenty of instructors looking for work. If you don't like the scenario, someone else probably is willing to do your job. Supply and demand 101
