Can someone summarize what happened in 2009? I joined in 2011 and did not go through that round. I am still around but still very anxious.

2009 was similar but the economy was terrible. It was a general cleaning up after years of not doing anything about it. Most of the affected were performance based or were very high positions with minimal impact due to shift in priorities. Once the economy picked up so did headcount again.

The 2009 layoffs were more a reduction of duplicate positions due to acquisitions from what I could tell. Same routine though, all done in one day, next day was business as usual. The 2009 layoffs seemed like a result of too many duplicate jobs and adjusting for the down economy at the time.
