Severance Pay and Termination Day

Those will be getting Weatherford severance pay must stay until their termination date. Otherwise they will give up their severance. Is making employees follow this legal? I think some employees are not waiting until their termination date to get another job. What are your thoughts?

Severance is mandatory in Canada, unless you are allowed to remain in the office while you complete your "notice" period. Weatherford likely will not allow you to stay though, opting to pay you to leave.

Severance is a voluntary gift to help those who suddenly no longer have an income. If you found another job to jump to immediately, then you don't have an income gap and don't need the severance.

Severance is a gift to you - it's absolutely 100% discretionary on the part of the employer, they set the rules. They do not have to pay you anything, they are setting the rules and you just follow them. They cannot however treat you differently from other folks, they have to be treating everyone equally when it comes to race or gender or age.

They don't have to pay you severance. It's a gesture of good will on the part of Weatherford
