Two people I personally know got the ax yesterday (January 21, 2015). One in Central Eng and one in Release Eng. Plus second-hand report of CPD.

Guys just to confirm APJ region got a hit also and people were pushed out
Here's the summary: Severance: 2 mo severance plus $2K cash plus 1 week’s pay for each full year worked at VMware. 400 folks. 3% of workforce. Will hire 2000 more to pursue different opportunities.
Company has confirmed layoffs. See:

sorry for those impacted by the layoffs. I have not seen any news reports or filings, wonder how they got around that. looks like packages were smaller than in 2013 as well. Company on the decline
I thought the R&D hiring freeze in 2014 was so they could hire more sales people!?! The chickens are definitely coming home to roost. I've been predicting it for a while. Irresponsible management, toxic HR policies (bonuses & raises are 100% "manager discretion" so the suck-ups, best friends, and cute ones get rewarded, the quiet hard workers get ignored, or worse, dissed). Top it off with a generous helping of engineering arrogance and a user experience group that was living in a surrealistic dream world for 3 years and shipped the world's worst user interface EVER. Rational minds and constructive feedback were shouted down, the emperor had a fine new set of clothes. Sadly, knowing how this place is managed, the people responsible for the failure will be the last ones standing.
I was hit yesterday, counted 47 on list from Carl's broader org. Heard rumor from finance that roughly 400 were hit with MBU, R&D, and sales getting hit the most. WARN notice was filed, I received copy in my packet. You stay on payroll for 60 days, get two months salary, 1 week for each full year worked, and $2K cash for some COBRA continuation.
Constantly missing sales targets, shrinking market share to Microsoft and Amazon, hiring half of Cisco, and not engineering any good products since 2009 or so are not a recipe for success it would seem.
No news really, it looks they are doing silent cuts this time, a few here, a few there. No WARN notices have been filed with the state, so it has to be a bunch of small batches
That first link is from 2013. Have anything more recent?
