What are your thoughts on Stack Ranking System, it seems that everyone hates it

Everyone hates it, waste of time and effort. Very bad for the morale...
Many companies still love it. A lot of tech firms are still using it. Pretty much all professional services firms are using it - once they have layoffs it's easy to do it as they start letting people go starting at the bottom of the ladder
How well that worked at GE?
If "stack ranking" is like "force ranking" then GE used it. And everybody knows how well that worked.
I hate it, Microsoft invented it and they are not using it any more
