Thread regarding Raytheon Co. layoffs

systematically laying people off

Raytheon has been systematically laying people off for the past 5 years starting with the IT outsourcing and now sequestration. Bottom line is that this trend is likely to continue all in an effort to keep the stock price propped up (now over $100).

I recently decided it was time to cut my losses and retire under my terms. Yes, I am over 50. Of the past five years, I have been passed over four of those years for pay increases. I was never rated at not meeting requirements but I am old and they know I would not be seeking a job elsewhere. I also felt the company was losing it's edge in it's zeal to cut cost to the customer . . too many quality control issues bleeding the cost of the product to the customer. Being former military, I no longer felt comfortable working in that environment.

Understood. The point is layoffs and RIFs are likely to continue going forward. It's you're over 50, you are a target and should not be surprised if you find yourself on a layoff/RIF list. If you're in this age range, start making other plans. Also, the company simply hasn't done enough to attract and retain younger talent to plan for its future. It doesn't have that "cool" factor.

Also, Raytheon's business is not as diversified as it claims as the lion share of it's income is derived from defense spending. With it's engineering prowess it could re-align its talent to developing some cool technology solutions for the consumer and business markets IMHO. After all, didn't it aquire BBN a few years ago

Layoffs due to less defense spending in R&D not to "prop up" stock price.

Of course there is age discrimination but that is difficult to prove unless you have an insider in HR who's willing to blow the whistle. If you're over 50, you're a target!
