Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

Get Out While You Can III

After the 225 stores close, what's going to happen to employee morale? Does anyone believe it's going to stop at 225? The local news in my area did a investigation on Staples. The news producer pulled the plug to the hard drive to see what the Easy Techs would do to repair the computer. The local Staples in question said the hard drive was corrupt and had to be replaced. They went to three different stores and two of them said the same thing. There was only one store out of the three that properly diagnosed the problem and plugged the cable back in place. At no charge.

Just to make sure people are using the right facts. Staples.com is NOT the worlds 2nd largest website. It's amazing how many people have this wrong. The tag of 2nd largest internet retailer comes from combining Staples.com, Quill.com, Bus Depot.com (Canada) & the largest piece is Staples Advantage (Contract business). They combine all the revenues to make that statement. In fact, Staples.com is a bit less than a third of the US Retail chain's sales (of course that ratio will change with closings). The decline in US Retail is happening much faster than Staples.com is growing.

500 includes the 225 slated to close this year. Staples can and does compete online. We are the number 2 commerce website in the world. Half of our total company sales the other day came from the website. That's major bucks when put up against 1500 stores. Don't say the website does not compete. It does, big time. This has nothing to do with Staples doing badly. Just consumers shifting to online purchases for business and personal use. We need to stay ahead of the curve. Sadly not that many people will lose their job with the store closings. The stores closing only average 12 to 21 associates per store. In a country of 375,000,000 people.... 5000 people losing a part time minimum wage job is not that many people that will qualify for unemployment. Stinks to say. But it's true. I feel most for managers and supervisors that made a decent living and supported their families with the income.

I can tell you right now, Staples is not popular in my local area. Customers get better deals elsewhere. The layoffs are not going to make them popular with the public and what customers they have today. If you get ripped off in the store, it's not going to be any different on the dot com. I wish there was "undercover boss" in my store at the time. You can't tell me the executives and the CEO didn't see this coming. When companies don't compete on the web successfully, they won't exist. Look at Borders..they never tried to compete. They are no more. After everyone is laid off and the company goes completely on line...it'll be too late to recover their reputation.

225 stores plus the 500 over the next three years...that's 725 stores. That'a a lot of people out on unemployment.

" 500 are slated for closure in 3 year time frame"...so I was right...it's not going to stop with 225 stores... Staples will be a dot.com only company.

If people stop buying those billions won't matter. And it's happening as we speak.

First off, Staples has over $1.125 Billion in cash on hand. Hardly doing bad. Each year that bonuses aren't given out, the more goes into that fund. No it won't stop at 225 stores closing in one year, 500 are slated for closure in 3 year time frame. It is what it is. Staples.com is the number 2, yes number two, commerce website in the world. So yes, they/we can compete with Amazon. We are handing Depot/Max stores $700 Million in brick and mortar store sales this year, but they are only number 8 in the world for website sales. Up next... Staples inc Ebay stores, and Staples as an Amazon authorized 3rd party seller. Where to invest $1.125 Billion..... I know! Delivery drones! It's coming. It's a partnership with Amazon.

Staples can't compete with Amazon.com and many other on line retailers. Does anyone think cutting the amount of stores is going to lower the prices offered on their web site?

Staples is going to become as extinct as the Palm Pilot and the 8 Track Tape.
