Past layoffs

In 2008 we let go over 500 people, at the same time we did hire 3,000 new workers, not bad for one of the worst years in the history of American business. We hire strategically, we let people go in the same manner and you need to do things like this to survive from the business perspective. UPMC is not unique in this, many well managed companies do the same thing. So, when you tally all things up we employ over 60K people now, we had 50K on payroll in 2008 - so, we survived and hired even more folks. Cannot blame anyone for being business-smart...
