I'll start with saying that I used to work for Merck, however I work for a (fierce) competitor right now. I work in R&D and I wanted to see if layoffs affected Mercks' R&D functions. We are going through a major round of R&D cutting right now and if I remember correctly Merck said last year that layoff plans will be executed as "a global initiative to sharpen its commercial and research and development focus." Any takers?

Maybe he's curious, it's an anonymous board, anybody can ask any question, right?
Why do you want to know this?
We always cut R&D and will continue to do so - it's the nature of the beast here - Merck is not the only one doing this, many of our competitors behave in a similar fashion. Fasten your seat belt and enjoy the ride, do not worry as you cannot change anything here, it's the nature of Merck's business.
