Thread regarding Marquette University layoffs

Always easiest to let janitors go first

I have a very strong feeling the 25 people being let go are not the higher paid ones on the Marquette campus. The 25 people being let go almost certainly are likely the lower to lowest paid ones on campus.

Food service staff? No! Food service is a revenue generator -- just take a look at the $11,000 a year for room and board. Ditto for custodians who clean the residence halls.

However, the 25 people being let go very likely will include custodians who clean classrooms, laboratories, offices, etc. Always easiest to let janitors go first. The Journal Sentinel has let at least six janitors go over the past four years as part of its semi-annual downsizings.

It's always easier to just expect the remaining janitors pick up the work load of their laid off counterparts. Never mind the campus buildings will not be as clean. Marquette is a Johnny come very late on this one. UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee have been cutting custodian positions for at least 18 years now. I know someone who until last summer. was a custodial supervisor at UWM. I also used to work for a UW-Madison research facility near Lake Kegonsa, and through the union, I heard about the cuts on the main campus.

I worked there as a janitor for 18 yrs. Everyone is paid the same. If a NEW janitor starts, he/she will earn the same as you, no matter how long you worked there. Horrible. When I exit, my single healthcare cost was hoovering just under $300 a month. Deductibles was unbearable to afford. Like the director at the time told all of us at a meeting, if you don't like it just leave.

I used to work at Marquette as a custodian for 19 years. In 19 years, there, I left at around $16.24 an hour. The health care cost for single coverage cost $221 per month with $5,000 deductibles and family plan was around $500 a month.

Do the math and you'll see what's the lost, if one was laid-off.
