After years of service, I was recently informed that my position would be part of the college-wide cuts. The only part of my layoff that makes me bitter is the short notice of my termination. It is clear that Houghton has been having financial troubles for years resulting in cuts to benefits and salaries. More than anything, I'm broken-hearted. I invested so much in this institution and community only to watch it all fall apart. I don't know how I'll sell my house or relocate my family, let alone find a new job at this stage of my career. Houghton is really treating employees poorly in this regard. I wish I would have been let go years ago when this all started. Instead, I'm left to struggle and try to find my own way with no support from a college that I poured my life into.
